World Tennis is a U.S. sports magazine devoted to the sport of tennis. The print magazine is published eight months per-year, while the magazine also operates a website, WorldTennisMagazine.com.
History
[edit]The magazine was established in {month} 1953, published out of New York with a regional focus.[2] Gladys Helman, the International Tennis Hall of Fame member who was instrumental at founding the modern-day WTA Tour. The tennis boom of the 1970s resulted in a rapid expansion of the magazine, both in scope and circulation. In addition to top tennis stars, celebrities like Johnny Carson and Farrah Fawcett appeared on the cover.[2]
CBS bought the magazine in 1972 from The New York Times Company.[4] It brought on two retired champions as part owners and contributors: first Chris Evert in 2000 then Pete Sampras in 2003.[5] In the early 2010s the circulation was 600,000 subscriptions, the majority of which were purchased by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) for its members.[6][7]
Acquired by Family Media Inc. of New York (with Golf Illustrated) in 1985, and was renamed Tennis Illustrated until the parent company shutdown in 1991.[8]
Around 2009, the trademark was acquired by Randy Walker and rebuilt into the tennis website and media outlet that it is today.[9]
Content
[edit]Aside from articles about the most recent events and most active players, the magazine also includes the recent ranking for both ATP and WTA, as well as brief summaries of the future tournaments, their participants and the past winners.
