I wrote this poem in fifth grade.
Joanna’s Story
- By: Mjbookster
- Joanna watched with longing eyes,
- Listening to the children’s cries,
- Of pleasure that it would be they,
- Were chosen for the Lord to say,
- A blessing and a prayer for them.
- Joanna glanced down at the gem,
- Which she held clasped in her small hand.
- Though it was nothing half so grand,
- As what she knew the Lord deserved,
- ‘twas well-loved and its purpose served :
- For ‘twas a gift she had prepared,
- To thank the Lord for how he shared,
- His healing and his love with all,
- Poor and sinful they heard the call,
- To repentance, forgiveness, peace,
- Then He would them from sin release.
- Joanna wanted, oh so much,
- To have the Lord her head to touch,
- And bless and pray for and to love.
- She mustered all her strength and strove,
- To reach the Lord when her ears heard,
- A shout at which her green eyes blurred.
- “He’s busy,” the voice said. “Go home,
- And leave the Lord Jesus alone!”
- Fresh tears streamed down Joanna’s face.
- It seemed the Lord gave all his grace,
- To children who were bold enough,
- To come on out and seek his love.
- But soon Joanna was proved wrong!
- For now she heard a voice so strong,
- And yet so tender and so soft,
- She knew it must be His. For oft’
- She’d fancied herself saying, “Sir…”
- And He would turn and talk to her.
- But now for real the Lord spoke out,
- His voice extending all throughout,
- “Let all the little children come,
- To me and do not hinder them,
- For my kingdom of heaven is,
- For all whose hearts are like these kids.”
- And then He turned and looked at her;
- Joanna’s heart began to stir.
- He smiled a smile so full of love,
- That now it burst and like a dove,
- She flew to him for now she knew,
- She did not have to journey through,
- Dangerous lands or bust’ling crowds,
- To reach His love for it would be,
- Forever in her heart, for He,
- Had put It there and It would stay,
- Forever, until the last day.
- And through it all, yet in her hand,
- The gem, though still not very grand,
- Was a gift and she would still give,
- It to Him for now she would Live.
