Akif Gurbanov
[edit]Akif Gurbanov was born in the Georgian SSR on August 3, 1981. In 1998, he graduated from Zangi High School No. 289 in Baku.
From 1998 to 2004, Akif Gurbanov pursued higher education at the faculty of treatment and prevention of Azerbaijan Medical university. In 2008, he graduated from the school of political studies under the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, reflecting his commitment to democratic development. From 2013 to 2016, he studied at the faculty of law of Karazin Kharkiv national university, demonstrating his dedication to the rule of law. In 2014, he participated in the Open World Program in the United States, indicating his interest in global perspectives.
Career
[edit]From 2002 to 2005, Akif Gurbanov served as the Deputy Chairman of the Ümid Party (Hope Party) for youth affairs, where he significantly impacted the party's youth policies. From 2005 to 2006, he led the Umid Party's central election headquarters, showcasing his strategic leadership and organizational skills.
From 2006 to 2016, he was a commissioner of the Central Election Commission.
Since 2013, Akif Gurbanov has been the Head of the Institute for Democratic Initiatives (IDI), furthering his commitment to democratic processes and governance.
On December 7, 2023, he co-founded the Third Republic Platform with other socio-political activists. On the same day, he was elected as its Speaker by the co-founders.
Activity and arrest
[edit]On March 6, 2024, Akif Gurbanov was arrested during a raid on the offices of Toplum TV, IDI, and the Third Republic Platform. The authorities charged him with conspiring to smuggle foreign currency, claiming they found €30,000 during the search. Gurbanov, along with his lawyer, denied these charges, stating that the money was planted by the police to silence his critical stance against the government.[1]
On March 8, 2024, Gurbanov was remanded to four months of pre-trial detention by the court.
On June 3, 2024, the Baku Court of Appeal upheld the Khatai Court’s decision to seize property from the offices of IDI and the Third Republic, dismissing the defense’s arguments that the arrests and seizures were illegal.
On June 4, 2024, the Third Republic released a statement detailing the threats Gurbanov faced in Baku’s pre-trial detention center N1. High-ranking government officials reportedly harassed Gurbanov in retaliation for his criticisms of the authorities during the Court of Appeals. They demanded that he cease his criticism of President Aliyev and allegedly threatened him with torture. Additionally, prison authorities were reported to have threatened other arbitrarily detained individuals involved with Toplum TV and IDI with worsening prison conditions if Gurbanov continued his criticisms[2]
