Between 1969 and 1972, I studied Chemical Physics at the University of Sussex. My only exposure to computers was writing a program, using a Teletype equipped with a paper tape punch, to output the words "Hello world".
For the next few years, I worked in a vegetarian cafe, in two British secondary schools (teaching maths and science) and in two housing associations (looking after tenants).
Then, between 1976 and 1978, I studied Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London. My favourite computer language was Algol-68.
From 1978 to 2019, I worked in information technology. Between 1997 and 2019, my main focus was on taxonomies and classification schemes and on their use in metadata.
During my years of employment, I had various public roles related to technical standards, including:
- Chair of the Dublin Core Data Model working group
- Co-Chair of the Unicode Conference organising committee
- Chair of the World Wide Web Consortium's Internationalization working group
- Chair of the International Press Telecommunications Council's News Metadata Framework working group
- Member of the Unicode Technical Committee
- Member of the World Wide Web Consortium's Advisory Committee
- Member of the World Wide Web Consortium's Resource Description Framework Model and Syntax working group
During that time, I co-authored a number of specifications, including:
- Standard Compression Scheme for Unicode
- Dublin Core Metadata for Resource Discovery
- Character Model for the World Wide Web 1.0: Fundamentals
I also co-chaired the following Unicode Conferences:
- Ninth International Unicode Conference, Sep 1996, San Jose, California
- Tenth International Unicode Conference, Mar 1997, Mainz, Germany
- Eleventh International Unicode Conference, Sep 1997, San Jose, California
