About me

[edit]

Hello, welcome to my user page. My name is Theresa Van, I am a college student who is pursuing nursing, but would much rather spend her school days doing something else. Activities that interest me more than my education include hanging out with my friends, baking[1], and pursuing my true passion of becoming an expert on the subject of bubble tea. In my recent attempts at becoming an expert on bubble tea, I have taken a liking to collecting various cups and containers from each bubble tea shop I visit, ultimately to build a currently-standing 4-foot tower. While my peers have often questioned my atypical interest, I have made it a goal of mine to state how obvious my love for this type of drink is by making it the most interesting fact about me.

My Wikipedia Interests

[edit]

My interests in Wikipedia and its vast amount of articles are, if it wasn't already blatantly obvious, articles on desserts. Outside of desserts, Wikipedia topics that interest me are those on on the various countries of Asia and their diverse cultures. My editing style consists of making small, more punctual changes to articles rather than major ones. I used to be a part of my school's publication's management team so I have a good grasp on what standard journalism should look like, as well as other similar areas of writing.

Article Evaluation

[edit]

One of my favorite music groups of all time are the global superstars from South Korea, BTS. Their music has made a major influence on the worldwide impact of the musical genre of K-pop (Korean pop), as their popularity has brought a rise in attention to the country and its various cultural aspects. Upon visiting their Wikipedia page, while their own article is very long with lots of well supported sections of information, there were many other articles that weren’t as packed. One article in particular that I found was a specific one on some common terms that are used within the K-pop community. I visited the “A-side and B-side” article on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: the length of the article, the sources listed in the references section, and its present day application.

Article Length

[edit]

Despite the usage of these terms being stated in the article originating around the early 1960s, the article itself is quite short for such dated and well known terms. Every section of the article only consists of 1-2 short paragraphs, most of which containing notes and hyperlinks to redirect readers to other articles, rather than explaining the content in this one. While repetition is a valid common concern, it can also be viewed as a lazy attempt at writing an informational article by allowing others to finish it for you. Needless to say it was an underwhelming read and does not fulfill its purpose of being an educational article on the subject matter.

Concerning Sources

[edit]

As previously stated there were quite a few hyperlinks and notes with the intention of redirecting readers to other places. Yet despite its frequent use of these, there were only 12 references stated at the bottom of the page, with over half of the sources being very outdated. At the very least this issue has been addressed by Wikipedia, as there is a statement posted at the very top of the page requesting “additional citations for verification”. In other words, it is recognized even by other Wikipedia users that this page is lacking in various ways, one of which is the absence of accurate and updated references, making it a sub-par article.

Present Day Application

[edit]

While it may not be a widely known fact that the terms A-side and B-sides are still being used to this day in certain music communities[2], it is mentioned at one point in this article. However, both the sections on its history and the single sentence on its present day application are quite lacking in material and can therefore be deemed insufficient. Because of the informational insufficiency in these significant areas, most especially considering how widely used these terms are, this article could be improved with the use of additional and more current sources and examples in order to help readers develop a better understanding on this topic.

Conclusion

[edit]

It is uncertain how measurable one’s interest in A-sides and B-sides must be in order to so desperately need an extremely detailed article on this matter, but nonetheless the lack of length, sources and present day applications should not be considered acceptable for an article of any kind. Had the authors of the article done more research and provided more sources, this article wouldn’t be subject to such level of scrutiny. However, while the article is limited in the information provided, there is clear potential for improvement which can ultimately save it and improve readers’ knowledge on A-sides and B-sides in music by making only simple adjustments.
