Tea Matanovic (Zagreb, 19. srpnja), Croatian playwright, dramaturge, screenwriter, and producer.

Early Life and Education

Matanović completed her primary education in ballet and rhythmics, later attending the esteemed Ana Maletić School of Contemporary Dance. With a passion for both fashion and drama, she pursued fashion design at the Faculty of Textile Technology and dramaturgy at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb. Due to her outstanding academic achievements, she was awarded a scholarship by the City of Zagreb.


Initially embarking on her career as a costume and set designer, Matanović collaborated with prominent theatre institutions such as Teatar Exit, Kazalište Trešnja, and Teatar &TD. In 2014, she made her debut as a playwright with the radio drama "Lacrimosa," directed by Mislav Brečić and broadcasted on the Third Program of Croatian Radio.

In 2019, Matanović won the award for the best regional drama text, "Salt in the Wounds," at the FIST Festival in Belgrade. The play "So na rane" (based on "Salt in the Wounds") premiered at Zvezdara Teatar in Belgrade on April 10, 2019. Both dramas were also staged and presented to the public as part of the DeSADU festival at the Academy of Dramatic Art – "Lacrimosa" directed by actress and director Arija Rizvić, and "Salt in the Wounds" directed by Matanović herself several years later. In 2020, "Sol na rane" was performed as a radio drama on the Third Program of Croatian Radio, directed by Petar Vujačić.


A dedicated member of SPID, the Association of Writers and Playwrights of Performing Arts, Matanović also held membership in the Croatian Designers Society from 2012 until 2023.

Drama Collection

The play "Salt on Wounds," was published in the drama collection "4 Plays" as a special edition of the Academy of Dramatic Art of the University of Zagreb and the Student Center in Zagreb, as part of the Small Drama Library of Teatar &TD.

Film Production

Since 2018, Tea has been actively involved in the film industry, contributing to the production of several notable works. Her impressive portfolio includes her role in the feature film "Tutto il mio folle amore" by the Oscar-winning Italian director Gabriele Salvatores, as well as her involvement in the debut feature film "Murina" by Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović. "Murina" was selected to be part of the prestigious 15 Days of Authors program at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Caméra d'or award for Best Debut Feature.

Additionally, she served as an executive producer for the short film "Penalty Shot" which was directed by Roko Biček and co-written by Kristian Novak and Rok Biček. The film, a production by Antitalent (Croatia), Cvinger (Slovenia), and Zwingera (Austria), is an adaptation of a chapter from Kristian Novak's novel "Dark Mother Earth" "Penalty Shot" was featured in the Author Shorts competition (Corti d'autore) at the 74th Locarno Film Festival and had its regional premiere at the 27th Sarajevo Film Festival, where it was included in the short film competition program.


As the executive producer for the acclaimed documentary series "Lovac na bilje," which aired on Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT), she played a vital role in bringing this captivating show to life. The series delved into the world of plants and their significance, enthralling audiences with its unique perspective and expert storytelling.

Matanović showcased her versatile skills as a producer and sound designer for the short film "Kiddo" under the direction and writing of René Gallo. Furthermore, she took on the role of executive producer for the critically acclaimed short film "Real Truth about the Fight" directed and written by Andrea Slaviček. This extraordinary project gained significant recognition and success by being included in the Cannes Film Festival's Critics' Week (Semaine de la critique) program.

In 2018, Matanović joined the prestigious production house Antitalent, where she quickly became an indispensable asset, bridging the gap between the creative and production sectors. During her tenure until the end of 2022, she collaborated closely with renowned screenwriters and directors.

As a testament to her talent and dedication to the film industry, Tea was selected as part of the first cohort of promising young producers for the esteemed CineLink Producers' Lab. This unique program is held in conjunction with the renowned Sarajevo Film Festival and is designed to provide valuable industry insight, networking opportunities, and professional development to emerging producers.

From 2023 onwards, Matanović actively embarked on her career as a screenwriter, further expanding her impressive portfolio within the industry.

Contemporary Art

In 2023, Matanović joined Galerija Miroslav Kraljević, one of Croatia's leading independent and nonprofit platforms for contemporary art. In her role, she actively participated in organizing and promoting exhibitions, engaging with the public through art education, and coordinating programs in collaboration with artists, curators, and other institutions both domestically and internationally.
