The island of Lombok, Indonesia, was struck by a sequence of damaging earthquakes over a nearly four week period, from 29 July to 19 August 2018. The five largest earthquakes, on 29 July, 5 August, 9 August and two on 19 August, measured Mw 6.4, 6.9, 5,9, 6.4 and 6.9 respectively. The first four events are regarded as: foreshock, mainshock and two aftershocks, with the fifth being a new mainshock. The sequence caused widespread damage on Lombok and locally on the neighbouring islands of Bali and Sumbawa. The 29 July foreshock caused 20 fatalities, with the August earthquakes causing a further 563 fatalities. All of the earthquakes were caused by movement on the Flores Back Arc Thrust Belt.
