Birkerød Gymnasium Model United Nations, abbreviated as BIGMUN, is an annual high-school level Model United Nations (MUN) conference which spans five days, always in the last full week of February. [1] It is the largest MUN conference in Scandinavia and is attended by both students living in Denmark and students from abroad. The conference takes place at Birkerød Gymnasium, a public high-school which lies approximately 30km north of Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. The next installment of the conference is BIGMUN 2018, which will be the biggest installment yet. The conference is managed by a student body known as the BIG9, combining the first three letters of the conferences abbreviated name, BIGMUN, and the number of students in the student body.
Conference Management
[edit]The conference is first and foremost a student-run project and so the primary decision-making body is comprised of students, headed by Conference Coordinator Andrew Archer and overseen by the BIGMUN Board of Directors, an actively-involved oversight body made up of interested teachers from the school.
The BIG9
[edit]The BIG9 is the student body responsible for arranging the conference. The number of members of the body can change and so there have also been a BIG6 and BIG7 team for previous annual sessions of the conference, with the BIG9 being responsible for BIGMUN 2018. This team is headed by the Secretary-General, who functions as key coordinator and administrator during the extensive preparation phase and also as the student head of the conference. Two Deputy Secretary-Generals assist in administration before the conference and function as key floor-managers during the conference. There are also currently 3 Heads of Staff and Administration, 2 Heads of Registration and 1 Head of Accommodation, all responsible for specific aspects of preparations for BIGMUN 2018. [2]
The Board of Directors
[edit]Currently, there are 8 members of the Board of Directors, though this also changes depending on the availability of teachers and the interest among Birkerød Gymnasium's extensive staff. They are responsible for many of the practical elements of the conference which students cannot organise themselves and work in close collaboration with the BIG9 closer to the conference, functioning as a sort of 'Upper House of the BIGMUN Parliament' ensuring that the ideas and ambitions of the BIG9 can be practically taken forward and applied during the conference.
The Conference Coordinator
[edit]BIGMUN has one Conference Coordinator who functions as the overall leader of the BIG9 and the Board of Directors. They are responsible for ensuring that all preparations are in order for the conference and ensuring the BIG9 and Board of Directors complete all necessary work for the conference. They are the main face in contact with MUN Directors at the conference.
