Joshua [Last Name] (born 13 February 1990) is an American-Nigerian racing driver who competes in the IndyCar Series, driving the No. 22 Dallara-Chevrolet for Team Penske. He competed in Formula One from 2010 until 2014, and again from 2017-2021, winning the 2018 Formula One World Championship with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. He's achieved further success in IndyCar, winning the IndyCar Championship three times, in 2015, 2016, and 2024.

Early Life and Career

[edit]

Migiditch was born in Allen, Texas to an English mother and Nigerian father, shortly after he was born his family moved to Maryland, and later to Lake Arbor in Prince George's County. He began karting at the age of 9 after meeting a relative of a family friend who worked for Newman-Haas Racing in Championship Auto Racing Teams. He would go on to win minor karting championships in 2001, 2003 and 2004.

Junior Formulae

[edit]

Migiditch would Graduate to Indy Lights in 2008, with Integra Motorsports w/ CGRT. Originally planning on running the full-time in the series, he was given an opportunity to compete in the GP2 Series alongside Indy Lights. He would announce running a split schedule between GP2 and Indy Lights at the 2008 Indianapolis 500.

Formula 1

[edit]

Brackley based teams (2008-2009)

[edit]

Honda (2008)

[edit]

At the 2008 Indianapolis 500, Honda announced that Olu would become Honda Racing F1's first development driver, in which he would also become the team's test and reserve driver. He would make his Formula One race weekend debut at the 2008 British Grand Prix, driving in FP1 in place of Rubens Barrichello.

Brawn (2009)

[edit]

After Honda pulled out the sport, Olu was without of a pathway to Formula One for 2009. After Ross Brawn and Nick Fry purchased the remains of Honda, Olu negotiated with Ross Brawn to remain with the team. On March 13th, 2009 Olu was announced as the flagship test, reserve and development for Brawn GP and Mercedes-powered teams, including McLaren, as a result of being absorbed into the McLaren Young Drivers programme.

Sauber (2009-2011)

[edit]

Force India (2012)

[edit]

McLaren (2013-2014)

[edit]

As a McLaren Young Driver, he would be bought out of his Force India contract to join the Woking outfit for the 2013 season after the departure of Lewis Hamilton, reuniting with Jenson Button. The 2013 season started in great fashion, with a second place on his debut in the Australian Grand Prix, finishing 1.2 seconds behind Kimi Räikkönen. Despite winning the last 3 races at the end of the 2013 season, Olu just didn't have enough to overtake Vettel in the championship, coming up 8 points short of becoming champion.

Mercedes (2017-2018)

[edit]

Before the 2017 season began, Olu at the time was in the process of extending his deal at Team Penske for the 2017 IndyCar Series season. However, on January 8th it was confirmed that Olu would join Mercedes for the 2017 season, joining then 3-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, creating the first ever all-black driver line-up in the sport's history.

At the Australian Grand Prix,

Alfa Romeo (2019-2021)

[edit]

In the aftermath of the drama at the German, Japanese and Russian Grand Prix's, Mercedes ended talks with Olu to extend his contract, leaving him jobless for the next season.

At the 2021 Turkish Grand Prix, Alfa Romeo announced that Olu would not return to the team in 2022. Olu would go on to finish his final Formula One race at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 3rd. After the controversial finish Olu would go on to make several remarks about the finish calling it "ridiculous", "a joke", "a disgrace to the sport", and wrapping up with "maybe I made the right choice to leave Formula One."

These comments made fans speculate that Olu was retiring, but he confirmed that he wanted to 'pursue other opportunities elsewhere'.

At the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix, Olu officially revealed that he had retired from Formula One, but wouldn't be against returning 'in an Alonso' type of way.
