Michelle L. Smith, aka Gogo Michelle, was born in the northwest section of Washington, DC on October 5, 1972, to the late Willie Smith, Jr. (a Ph.D. graduate from Howard University School of Law 1968) and Isabelle L. Hertz. Michelle grew up in a middle class home with both parents. She graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in Washington, DC. She then went off to college and attended a nursing program. She worked in the medical field for eighteen years and then decided to return to school for a career change. Following in her father’s footsteps, she graduated with honors from Howard University with a BA in Communications (2007) and an MA in History (2008). In addition, Michelle published her first book, Playing Your Game, in 2003. Michelle also started her own entertainment company and has produced three albums under the Gogo M Entertainment label. The first album, Have You Seen Gogo, was released in 2008 and her second album, Hegemony, was released in 2010. She also produced Cyriz da Viruz’s first album, Blue Ribbon, which was released in 2011 (www.cyrizdaviruz.com).
Michelle is known for struggling and enduring harsh economic times and still finding the time to help others within her community. Most importantly, she states that the current economic recession has humbled her greatly.
Michelle was married for approximately ten years and divorced in 2006. She has three children, two girls and one boy. Her oldest daughter is a senior at Morgan State.
