Tobacco Product Use in Hong Kong
Background on Data
[edit]E-cigarettes entered the Hong Kong market around 2008. [1] Heated tobacco products, like IQOS, entered the Hong Kong market around 2016 [source needed.]
Tobacco product use in Hong Kong data is collected for adults (age 15+) every two-to-three years by the Census and Statistics Department's "Thematic Household Survey."[2] This includes information on combustible tobacco, e-cigarette, and heated tobacco (HTP.)
Data on youth tobacco use is collected via a school-based survey conducted by the Food and Health Bureau, as well as reported in the Thematic Household Survey Report for primary school students (grades P4-P6) and secondary school students grades (S1-S6.)
The latest edition is the Thematic Household Survey Report - Report No. 70 - Pattern of Smoking, published on June 8, 2020.[3]
Definitions
[edit]The Thematic Household Survey defines: "Smoking" as "all forms of tobacco and related products, including cigarette, heated tobacco product, e-cigarette, cigar, hand rolled cigarette, water pipe, and pipe-smoking"; "Current Smokers" as "those persons who had a smoking habit (regardless of the forms of tobacco or related products)..." at the time of the survey; "Daily cigarette smokers" refers to "those persons who had a daily cigarette smoking habit" at the time of the survey"; and "Ex-daily cigarette smokers" as "those persons who previously had a daily cigarette smoking habit for a continuous period of 6 months and more but had given it up" at the time of the survey.
Rates of Combustible* Tobacco Use - Adults
[edit]As of the latest survey, in 2019 the prevalence of current cigarette smoking among adults, 15 years and over, was 11.1%.
Year of Survey | Daily Cigarette Smokers | Ex-daily cigarette smokers |
---|---|---|
2019 | 10.2% | 4.3% |
2017 | 10% | 4.5% |
2015 | 10.5% | 5.6% |
2012 | 10.7% | 5.8% |
2010 | 11.1% | 4.8% |
2007 | 11.8% | 5.1% |
2005 | 14% | 4.5% |
2003 | 14.4% | 2.7% |
2000 | 12.4% | 3.8% |
1998 | 15% | 3.8% |
*Due to the definition of "smoking" as including heated tobacco products and e-cigarettes, the likely prevalence of combustible smoking is lower among the adult population. While the survey does not report on exclusive use of these non-combustible forms of tobacco/nicotine, table 3.1 illuminates the use of these other products among the smoking population:
