Michael Miloro, DMD, MD, FACS Notable Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. Michael Miloro (1963-present) is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, who is the Editor of the major textbook in oral and maxillofacial surgery, Peterson’s Principles of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, published by PmPH-USA in 2004 (2nd Edition) and 2012 (3rd Edition). He is Editor of Management of Complications in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, published by Wiley-Blackwell in 2012. Dr. Miloro is also the Editor of Trigeminal Nerve Injuries, published by Springer-Verlag in 2013. He is also the pioneer of a technique of distraction osteogenesis of the neonatal mandible, and several nerve repair procedures including a sural nerve harvest and inferior alveolar nerve exposure technique, and he has published extensively in the medical and dental literature.
Dr. Michael Miloro is currently Professor, Department Head, and Residency Program Director in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry in Chicago, Illinois.
Dr. Miloro received his undergraduate BS degree in the field of Neurobiological Sciences at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, in 1984, and completed his dental school training by earning a DMD degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA, in 1988. Dr. Miloro obtained his MD degree in 1991, and completed his postgraduate residency training in General Surgery as well as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA, in 1994. Dr. Miloro’s surgical training was influenced by many great oral and maxillofacial surgeons, including Dr. Raymond J. Fonseca and Dr. Peter D. Quinn.
Dr. Miloro began his academic career by joining the full-time faculty at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in Columbus, OH, as an Assistant Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery working under the tutelage of Dr. Larry J. Peterson. In 1999, Dr. Miloro joined the full-time faculty of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Maryland at Baltimore as an Associate Professor and Postgraduate Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with Dr. James R. Hupp as the Chairman of the Department.
Dr. Miloro relocated to Omaha, NE, to face the challenge of leading a formal and extensive restructuring of the residency training program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where he was honored with the Leon F. Davis Distinguished Chair in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Miloro was a Professor of Surgery, Section Chief of the Section of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medical Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, and Director of Postgraduate Training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Miloro’s success at Nebraska has contributed to his national and international reputation as a leader in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
After a seven-year tenure at Nebraska, Dr. Miloro relocated to Chicago, Illinois, to face another significant challenge of rebuilding the entire Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, including the recruitment of key faculty and residents into the Department. Both the undergraduate and graduate sections of the Department were in need of major restructuring and revitalization, and Dr. Miloro has succeeded in creating a premiere program in oral and maxillofacial surgery in the USA.
During his career thus far, Dr. Miloro was appointed to serve on the Examination Committee of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from 2008-2013. He also is a Fellow of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Miloro is an AO-CMF and SORG faculty member; he is the Chairman of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Special Subcommittee on the Parameters of Care; he serves on the Editorial Board of two journals, Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology, and Endodontics; and is a reviewer for several journals including the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Journal of the American Dental Association. He has been a Site Visitor representing the American Dental Association and Commission on Dental Accreditation for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2012, Dr. Miloro was honored with the Arnold K. Maislen Award for Excellence in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery by New York University.
Dr. Miloro has received intramural and extramural funding for research endeavors that have led to publication of over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals, numerous abstract presentations, and several textbook chapters in key Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery texts, and he has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally. Dr. Miloro has served as Editor of one of the major textbooks in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Peterson’s Principles of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2nd Edition, and 3rd Edition published by PmPH-USA in 2012. He has also edited another textbook, Management of Complications in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, published by Wiley-Blackwell in 2012. Dr. Miloro is the Editor of yet another textbook, Trigeminal Nerve Injuries, due for publication in 2013 by Springer-Verlag. Dr. Miloro’s recreational interest in fountain pens has led to the publication of a book on the fountain pens of Denmark, Penol Pens and Pencils, available as an ePub book.
Dr. Miloro has varied research interests including the evaluation and management of injuries to the trigeminal nerve, bone graft healing and survival, implant reconstruction, guided tissue regeneration, orthognathic surgery, and distraction osteogenesis.
Dr. Miloro is an American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery board-certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who maintains an active clinical practice, with particular interests in orthognathic surgery and distraction osteogenesis of the facial skeleton, including neonatal distraction of the mandible for airway issues, implant placement and adjunctive implant procedures, cosmetic facial surgery, temporomandibular surgery, and facial trauma management.
Dr. Miloro is married to Dr. Mary Beth Miloro, a faculty member in the Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry, and they have a daughter, Macy. Dr. Miloro and his family are excited and enthusiastic about the possibilities and potential at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In fact, under Dr. Miloro’s tenure, an integrated Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery M.D. degree program has begun at the University of Illinois. Dr. Miloro has also recruited a head and neck surgeon, Dr. Antonia Kolokythas to the faculty at the University of Illinois. Dr. Miloro shares the faculty’s vision of maintaining and enhancing a prestigious Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program and College of Dentistry. He is excited to be able to contribute to both the education and training of undergraduate dental students as well as advanced specialty residents in the College, and have an impact on the well being and care of the people of the State of Illinois.
