Königstraße is a baroque boulevard in Dresden, Germany, running from the Japanese Palace to Albertplatz in the Innere Neustadt district. Nearly all of the buildings are preserved baroque originals.

History

Königstraße was built during the reconstruction by August the Strong(1670–1733) of the surrounding area after the fire of 1685, between 1722 and 1732, to a design by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann (1662–1736). Originally referred to as Neue Königstadt (New King's City), the area is now just called Neustadt. August envisaged a planned baroque city on the right bank of the Elbe River. As originally conceived, Königstraße would be 340 m long and 30 m wide, lined with linden trees and baroque buildings, providing a vista of the Japanese Palace.
