Sisingamangaraja dynasty was a Batak dynasty that ruled the Toba-Tapanuli based Batak Kingdom from its founding in 1540 until the death of Sisingamangaraja XII in 1907 during the Tapanuli War, a war against Dutch colonisation. For most of the time, the territory of the Sisingamangaraja dynasty fell under a suzerainty of various surrounding kingdoms, most notably were the Pagaruyung and Aceh Sultanate, which also enables their ability to declare war against the Dutch. The role of the Sisingamangaraja dynasty in the Toba Batak society was to be a ruler and a priest simultaneously, being the paramount priest of the Parmalim, a native Batak religion, the Sisingamangaraja leaders fulfill their religious tasks but also doing their secular tasks as a king, although they were merely seen as a ruler among equals ("primus inter pares" or in Batak adat law "dalihan na tolu") since the Batak beliefs and mythology emphasize that Bataks are the descendant of a devine blood from Siraja Batak, their mythological ancestors. Today the remaining legacy of the Sisingamangaraja dynasty was a palace located in Bakkara valley, the former capital of the Batak Kingdom, a Tomb belonging to Sisingamangaraja XII, both today are tourist attractions in North Sumatra.
