Sardana Avksentyeva is the first female mayor of Yakutsk, Russia.[1][2]

Life

[edit]

Avksentyeva was born in Yakutia to Yakutian parents.[1] However as a young child they lived in Georgia, where her father worked in the air force.[1] At five years old, her family moved back to Yakutsk.[1]

She is currently married to her second husband, Viktor Avksentiev, and she has four children.[1] Viktor and Sardana met while both working in city government in Yakutsk.[1]

Career

[edit]

Avksentyeva won the mayoral election in Yakutsk against a candidate from President Vladimir Putin's United Russia Party.[2] She ran on a platform of reducing unnecessary extravagant spending on the part of city government. She gained international attention recently when she promised to start selling off the city's cars to pay for city services.[2]
