The Shape Of Things is a 2011 album by John Foxx And The Maths, the follow-up album to Interplay released just seven months earlier. Like Interplay it was recorded and mixed in the studio belonging to band member Benge using analogue synthesisers and drum machines.
The album was initially only made available at concerts during the Interplay tour during October 2011. It was described as being a lot rougher around the edges and more experimental than Interplay with songs and stark, minimal sketches mixed in with some instrumental interludes.[1] The song "Talk" was previewed via youtube. "The Shadow Of His Former Self" was the only track from the album to be played live during the tour. "September Town" had already been released as companion track to the band's first single "Destination" in December 2009, although the version featured on the album is slightly shorter[2].
This limited edition version of the album came packaged as a hard-back book designed by Jonathan Barnbrook, and with a bonus album of remixes by Ghost Box, Wrangler (featuring Stephen Mallinder from Cabaret Voltaire), Gary Numan collaborator/remixer Andy Gray and Xeno & Oaklander who also supported The Maths during two dates of the tour. The bonus disc also features a brand new track recorded with Tara Busch, who also supported John Foxx And The Maths on their Interplay Tour.[3]. The track was not performed live on the tour.
The album was made available to the public on 31 October 2011 via Townsend Records internet site.
