The Big Bad Wolf Book Sale is an annual sale touted as the world’s largest book sale, with up to 3 million books on offer during a single event. Books are sold with a 75% - 95% discount each, due to their status as remaindered books which are sold off by publishers at drastically reduced prices.
The sale is organised annually by Malaysian bookstore BookXcess, with mini sales on tour across Malaysia.
History
[edit]The Big Bad Wolf Book Sale was launched in 2009 as a warehouse sale in Dataran Hamodal, Petaling Jaya.[1] A total of 120,000 books were sold and the event received a positive reception, prompting a move to larger venues and more books per sale.
In the latest 2014 Sale, 3.5 million books were put on sale over 17 days, with the event remaining open 24 hours daily.[2]
Locations
[edit]The first sales were held in Dataran Hamodal and in Amcorp Mall, where BookXcess’ first store is still located. In 2011, to accommodate more books and more visitors, the Sale was held outside the Petaling area for the first time in MAEPS, Serdang. The year after, the Sale was moved to the Malaysian International Exhibition and Convention Centre, where it has been held at the end of every year since.
Outside of the Klang Valley, sales have also been held in Penang Times Square, Danga City Mall and Melaka International Trade Centre.
Milestones
[edit]The first mini sales were introduced in 2013 as smaller events held in the states of Penang, Melaka and Johor. Other years have also seen sales held in Pahang, Terengganu and Negeri Sembilan.
In 2014, the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale teamed up with local publisher FIXI to host the launch of an event-themed fiction anthology, MALAM (Night). The limited-edition single run of 3,000 books sold out within 14 hours. [3][4]
