The Association for Women in Architecture + Design (AWA+D and formerly known as The Association of Women in Architecture AWA) is a professional society for women in the fields of architecture and design.
History
[edit]AWA+D traces its roots back to 1915, when four architecture students were denied entrance into the men's architectural fraternity at Washington University in St. Louis.[1] These students, Mae Steinmesch, Helen Milius, Angela Burdeau and Jane Pelton created their own society which they first named La Confrerie Alongine.[1] After discovering other women from other schools were interested in joining a similar organization, they formed Alpha Alpha Gamma (AAG) which was a sorority for architecture students.[2]
In 1928, Steinmesch became president of AWA.[2]
was an organization affiliated with Alpha Alpha Gamma (AAG).
