Editing 101

[edit]

Paragraph: This helps you set the style of the text. For example, a header, or plain paragraph text. You can also use it to offset block quotes.

A : Highlight your text, then click here to format it with bold, italics, etc. The "More" options allows you to underline, add code snippets, and change language keyboards.

Links: The chain button allows you to link your text. Highlight the word, and push the button. The visual editor will automatically suggest related Wikipedia articles for that word or phrase. This is a great way to connect your article to more Wikipedia content. You only have to link important words once, usually during the first time they appear. If you want to link to pages outside of Wikipedia (for an "external links" section, for example) click on the "External link" tab.

Cite: The citation tool in the visual editor helps format your citations. You can simply paste a DOI or URL, and the visual editor will try to sort out all of the fields you need. Be sure to review it, however, and apply missing fields manually (if you know them). You can also add books, journals, news, and websites manually. That opens up a quick guide for inputting your citations. Finally, you can click the "re-use" tab if you've already added a source and just want to cite it again.

Bullets: To add bullet points or a numbered list, click here.

Insert: This tab lets you add media, images, or tables.

Ω The final tab allows you to add special characters, such as those found in non-English words, scientific notation, and a handful of language extensions.

Talk Page Reminders:

Open up the page just as you would open up an article to edit. Underneath the comment you're responding to, type a colon ( : ). Each : will indent your response deeper into the conversation. So if you respond to a response, use two colons, etc.

It is crucial that you sign your messages with four tildes ( ~~~~ ) to automatically mark it with your username and a timestamp.

Citations with wikicode:

You can access wikicode from edit mode by clicking the pencil icon and selecting "Source editing".

Then, follow these instructions:

  1. Check that the bottom of the page has a "References" or "Notes" section. If not, type: ==References==.
  2. Check that the References section either has the text {{reflist}} or <references />. If not, type: {{reflist}}. This determines where your references will appear on the page.
  3. Now click after the text you would like to create a reference for.
  4. Now type in the <ref> tag before your reference and type </ref> after your reference. Wiki software will automatically add your inline reference number.

Article Evaluation

[edit]

I learned that you have to see where all the sources are from. You can't have one article pulling from just one source. I also learned that articles should be from reliable resources kind of like the sources we would use for a research paper. Resources should also be checked for their relevance and dates. If the resource only mentions the topic of the wikpage then it may not be a good source or there may be a stronger source somewhere else.

Translating Articles

[edit]

Module Notes:

While you may have seen elsewhere that it's a bad idea to copy and paste an entire article into your sandbox, it's perfectly OK to paste a foreign-language Wikipedia article into your sandbox.

However, it's very important that you copy and paste the WikiCode, not just the article.

  • Click "Edit source" at the very top of the article. You'll see the source code.
  • Copy the source code.
  • Paste the source code into your sandbox, and save it.
  • Verify that the original references have carried over to your sandbox version.

If the references don't appear, do the following:

  1. Check that the bottom of the page has a "Notes" or "References" section. If not, type: ==Notes==.
  2. Check that the Notes section either has the text {{reflist}} or <references />. If not, type: {{reflist}}. This determines where your references will appear on the page.

Crediting the article:

  • (a) When you create the new article (in your sandbox), or when you add translated content to an existing article, you'll be asked for an "edit summary." Add the following: Content in this edit is translated from the existing French Wikipedia article at [[:fr:Exact name of French article]]; see its history for attribution.
  • (b) Place the template {{translated page}} on your new article's Talk page. :fr (french) so :pt is (Portuguese) etc.

Translating Article Ideas

[edit]

I looked at the A Escondidas wiki page (English) and I saw that it was still a stub article. This wiki page was missing a summary of the movie, a picture of the movie poster, and a music list. I looked at the Portuguese wiki page for A Escondidas and I saw that that page had a little more information and a lot of useful links that I can use if I want to further work on this article. I also used other film wiki pages to see how in depth they looked to see what the A Escondidas english wiki page was missing. I know that some movies will be more in depth and some will not but the training module did say that I didn't have to exactly copy a page that I am looking at so I will adapt and add what I think is appropriate to my wiki page. I also need to pay attention to crediting the article that I use to translate.

Week 6: Final Topic

[edit]

Hola, Maximus Hortensius Secundas! Be sure to revisit the Assignment for Week #3 and add the necessary header here in your Sandbox, as well as some information on an article that you're evaluating. What is the article, and what are your thoughts on what it is missing? Danielbritain (talk) 20:58, 25 February 2018 (UTC)

Hola, Maximus Hortensius Secundas; good work on getting your sandbox set up. I've helped you a little by making some of your sections more clear--look at the source code to see how I made these headers. Also be sure to revisit the Assignments for Weeks #3 and #4. You should pick out a specific article to evaluate, and go through the Assignment suggestions to evaluate it (for proper citation, for neutral tone, etc). This week, per Assignment #4, you should be making your first small edits to pages. This can be doing some light copy-editing, adding a sentence or two, or leaving notes in the Talk pages of articles stating your intent to do more serious work. Good start, let's keep it up!
