Punching Shear

[edit]
Point load under punching shear failure

Punching shear is the shear failure of structural members due to high concentrated loads or highly localised forces[1]. Punching shear failure is a sudden catastrophic type of failure that occurs around the column and the reinforced concrete member it is in contact with. It occurs when the shearing stresses around the loaded area result in the formation of diagonal tension cracks which in-turn results in the formation of diagonal fracture plain. Punching shear is observed in flat slabs and foundations[2] and can occur due to point load under and due to point load over and also a combination of the two.
