The women's handball tournament at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru is scheduled to be held at the Sports Centre Hall 1 from July 24 to August 30.[1]
For these Games, the women are to compete in an 8-team tournament. The teams were grouped into two pools of four teams each for a round-robin preliminary round. The top two teams in each group are to advance to a single elimination bracket.
Brazil are the defending champions from the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, defeating Argentina 25–20 in the final.
The winner of the tournament is to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.[2]
Qualification
[edit]A total of eight women's teams qualified to compete at the games. The top three teams at the Central American and Caribbean Games, the top two teams at the South American Games, and the winner of the North Zone Qualifying round qualified, along with the host nation Peru.[3] Chile (3rd placed finisher at the South American Games), Mexico and Guatemala (4th and 5th at the Central American and Caribbean Games) and Canada (loser of the North Zone Qualifying) competed for the last spot in the tournament.
