The first season of the the USA Network espionage/drama series Covert Affairs premiered on June 13th 2010 immediately after another, similar series White Collar.[1]
Overview
[edit]Annie Walker (Piper Perabo) is a 28 year old CIA trainee who is suddenly pulled out of training and placed into the field to work in the fictional Domestic Protection Division (DPD). This promotion is believed to have something to do with Annie's exceptional linguistic skills.[2] In the series' pilot, Annie is chosen for a mission to retrieve information from a Russian defector. The operation goes awry when the informant is shot dead. Annie is unsure that the person who was to give her the intel was who they said they are. Eventually, the real spy emerges and attempts to kill her but Annie is save by her former boyfriend, Ben Mercer. When she returns to CIA headquarters, Joan tells her that another officer came just in time to save her. Her career now thrusts her in to a life of danger-filled operations at the command of Joan Campbell (Kari Matchett), the current director of the DPD and wife of the Director of the National Clandestine Service, Arthur Campbell.[3] Navigation through her new life is thanks in part to August "Augie" Anderson (Christopher Gorham), a military intelligence/special operations officer who, whiles on a mission, lost his eyesight. While the exact reasoning for Annie's sudden promotion are unknown, it may also be in relation to Annie's ex-boyfriend Ben Mercer (Eion Bailey) who is being targeted by the CIA. Jai Wilcox (Sendhil Ramamurthy), who is a CIA field officer who was transferred to the DPD, assists Annie in her new life. Wilcox is believed to have some ulterior motive.[3] Annie lives in the guest house of her married sister, Danielle (Anne Dudek) who is unaware of her life at the CIA[4] only knowing her cover-story that she works in the Acquisitions department of the Smithsonian Museum. Joan and Arthur are seeing a marital councilor because of the suspicions of Joan that Arthur is cheating on her.[4]
In the series Augie, a visually-impaired agent who lost his sight during an operation to Afghanistan, has served a role in many different capacities. Minor roles of Auggie include the scenes where he is shown assisting Annie and in "No Quarter", Auggie is defending himself against claims from his superiors that he is a mole in the agency (the mole is later revealed in "When the Levee Breaks", the season finale episode, to be Jai's father Henry Wilcox). To a larger extent, in the episode "Houses of the Holy", Auggie is assigned the handler for the special operations unit he formerly worked for[5] and in "Communication Breakdown", after a a short communications failure, he is assigned to retrieve the code from the computer hacker that forged the communications attack who is revealed to be Auggie's ex-girlfriend.[5]
Joan Campbell is the Director of the Domestic Protection Division. She is in a higher rank that women get to in the male dominated agency. She is challenged with a task to keep her personal relationship with Arthur out of her work life. This task becomes harder when she suspects that Arthur is cheating on her.[6] Throughout the series, there are scenes showing Joan and Arthur seeing a couples therapist.

A young CIA trainee, Annie Walker, is mysteriously sent out into the field. Auggie Anderson, a blind agent, is Annie's guide in her new life. As the exchange starts, the informant is killed. Annie makes it out of the room only to forget to retrieve the intel. She goes back to retrieve it and does not believe the person who died is who they say he is. She investigates more only to get in trouble about protocol and using civilians to help on a case. Eventually the real spy emerges and almost kills Annie, but her boyfriend (Ben, whom she is looking for) helps her by killing the spy. She is not too sure if she saw him, so she tells Joan (her boss). Joan dismisses it and says that another agent got there just in time to save Annie.
