[edit]- ^ Saavedra circled Manus and landed possibly in the Murai islet in its south west. Murai was found inhabited and some natives came out in canoes attacking with arrows. Three of these men were captured by the Spaniards and were returned by Saavedra to the same island on his second attempt to return to North America the following year. Manus was charted as Urays la Grande or Big Urays, which is probably a projection of Murai to signify the big Murai

- ^ Due to its many shoals and coral reefs in its surroundings. Torres had entered what he called the "placel", the shallow bank which forms the Torres Strait
- ^ Considered connected to Bristow
- ^ Prado y Tovar referred to the island as "isla de caribes muy grandes de a 12 palmos y medio" (island of very tall caribs of 12.5 spans). In the matter of the length of a span, palmo, ther were different values in use in 1600; according to the sixteenth-century geographer aand mathematician Petrus Apianus, a palmo was the stretch of four fingers, not incluidng the thumb, or about 15cm. This would give the natives of this island a height of up to 190cm
- ^ Due to the swamps in its central part and the volcanic rocks that can be found in its shores
- ^ The island, with the highest peak (227m) of all the surrounding islands, reminded Prado y Tovar of the holy mountain of Montserrat, near Barcelona
- ^ Thus was this island called together with the nearby Pandjang and Batu Puteh

- ^ Pedro de Ortega Valencia, named the island after his home town Guadalcanal in Andalusia, Spain. The name comes from the Arabic Wādī l-Khānāt (وادي القنا), which means "Valley of the Stalls" or "River of Stalls", referring to the refreshment stalls which were set up there during Muslim rule in Andalusia. In the years that followed the discovery, the island was variously referred to as Guadarcana, Guarcana, Guadalcana, and Guadalcanar, which reflected different pronunciations of its name in Andalusian Spanish
- ^ Considering the expedition leaders Mendaña and cosmographer Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa were both from Galicia in Spain it was probably so named after the island of the same name in this region
- ^ The narrow channel separating San Jorge Island from Santa Isabel Island was also given its present day name, Ortega Channel after the commander of the expedition
- ^ Las Tres Marias was the name given to the Olu Malau Islands
- ^ Still very frequently charted as San Cristobal in present day maps

- ^ Quite surprisingly for the Spaniards, upon their arrival to Fais the local people approached the ships in canoes making the sign of the cross and saying "Buenos días, matelotes!" in perfect sixteenth century Spanish ("Good day, sailors!"), this being an evidence that one of the previous Spanish expeditions had been in the area
- ^ The islet in its north-west end was charted as San Agustín (St. Augustine)
- ^ They have appeared in the maps as the Monteverde Islands till recently
- ^ When Magellan arrived on Guam, he was greeted by hundreds of small outrigger canoes that appeared to be flying over the water, due to their considerable speed. These outrigger canoes were called Proas, and its given name resulted from the triangular shaped straw sails they used

- ^ Saipan, together with Tinian, was possibly firstly sighted by Europeans by the Spanish expedition of Ferdinand Magellan, when it made a landfall in the southern Marianas on 6 March 1521. Again, it is likely it was sighted by Gonzalo Gómez de Espinosa in 1522 on board of Spanish ship Trinidad, that in an attempt to reach he commanded after the death of Ferdinand Magellan. This would have happened after the sighting of the Maug Islands in beteween the end of August and end of September. Gonzalo de Vigo deserted in the Maugs from Gomez de Espinosa's Trinidad and in the next four years, living with the Chamorros, visited thirteen main islands in the Marianas and possibly Saipan among them. However, the first clear evidence of Europeans arriving to Saipan was by the Manila galleon Santa Margarita commanded by Juan Martínez de Guillistegui, that wrecked in the island on February 1600 and whose survivors stayed in it for two years till 250 were rescued by the Santo Tomas and the Jesus María
- ^ The Spaniards formally occupied the island in 1668, with the missionary expedition of Diego Luis de San Vitores who was the one that named it San José
- ^ Being neighbour to Saipan the history of their discovery by westerners are the same
- ^ Name given by the Jesuit missionaries Luis de Sanvitores and Luis de Morales that in the 1668-1688 period led expeditions to establish Spanish presence in the Mariana Islands
- ^ The Spanish missionary Diego Luis de San Vitores visited Agrihan in 1669 calling it San Francisco Javier (St. Francis Xavier)
- ^ Evangelization was carried out by the missionary expedition of Jesuit Luis de Sanvitores in 1668 that named Maug as San Lorenzo (St. Lawrence)

- ^ One of the islets of this atoll was charted as San Esteban by Villalobos because they landed on it on St. Stephen's day
- ^ Two of its islets were charted as San Pedro and San Pablo, those being the names of the flagship ("capitana") and the "almiranta" (secondary ship or ship of the Admiral)
- ^ The islands were given their present name of Marquesas by Álvaro de Mendaña after his patron, García Hurtado de Mendoza, 5th Marquis of Cañete (Spanish: Marqués de Cañete) who was Viceroy of Peru at the time
- ^ Mendaña's expedition landed at Vaitahu that they named Madre de Dios (God's Mother in Spanish)
- ^ The current name, Salas y Gómez, is derived from the name of Spaniards José Salas Valdés, the discoverer, and José Manuel Gómez who visited them on 18 October 1805 and made the first detailed description of the island
- ^ Named as such because it was discovered on the day following the feast of the Holy Name
- ^ Flint and Puka-Puka were collectively named Islas Infortunadas (Misfortunate Islands) by Magellan's expdition
- ^ Other Spanish names were San Blas (St. Blaise), given by de Quiros' captain Diego de Prado y Tovar, and Corral de Agua (Water Corral) is found in some contemporary charts
- ^ Fernández de Quirós described the four islands of the Acteon group as "four islands crowned by coconut palms". On the different texts describing his voyage by other members of this Spanish expedition they were charted as Las Cuatro Hermanas (The Four Sisters), Las Virgenes (The Virgins) or Las Anegadas (The Flooded ones).
- ^ However his captains Prado y Tovar and Vaéz de Torres refer to it as Santa Polonia (St. Apollonia) as it was sighted on the day of this Christian martyr
- ^ Other Spanish name was San Guillermo (St. William), given by de Quiros' captain Diego de Prado y Tovar
- ^ It was later visited by Spanish explorer Domingo de Boenechea in 1774, that charted it as Las Ánimas (The Souls)
- ^ Hence this atoll appears in some maps as St. Simon
- ^ Starting not earlier than mid 18th century Spanish charts collectively name the Bonins as Islas del Arzobispo. Reason for this name is most likely in the expedition organized by the Arzobispo (Archbishop) Pedro Moya de Contreras, Viceroy of New Spain, to explore the northern Pacific and the islands of Japan. Particularly the main objective was to find the long sought and legendary islands of Rica de Oro (Rich in Silver), Rica de Plata (Rich in Silver) and Islas del Armenio (Islands of the Armenian). After several years of planning and frustrated attempts the expedition finally set sail on 12 July 1587 commanded by Pedro de Unamuno. Even if it did revisit the Daitō Islands, already cherted by Bernardo de la Torre, the expedition was not considered succesful as no islands rich in silver or gold were found.
- ^ Names referring the fact that it is a low island almost level with water's edge, viz, an obstacle to navigation
- ^ The Daitōs were again visited by Pedro de Unamuno pn 28 July 1587 commanding the Manila galleon, who called them Islas sin Provecho (Useless Islands)
- ^ Oki Daitō Jima was again sighted by a Manila galleon, this time the last one to be commissioned in 1815 (The San Fernando de Magallanes) and charted as Isla Rasa (Flat Island) which was the name it retained for 150 years
- ^ These Spanish names for the Volcano Islands, Sufre, San Agustin, and San Alejandro were not given by de la Torre's expedition, who just collectively named them as Volcanes, and they instead appear in later printed Spanish charts
- ^ Named after Spanish Admiral Sebastian López, victorious in the battles of La Naval de Manila in 1646 against the Dutch
- ^ Name due to a Manila galleon probably having had to lighten load ("alijar" in Spanish) close to the rocks
- ^ Visited later by the Spanish expedition of Ruy López de Villalobos in 1542, the renamed it as La Anublada (The Misty)
- ^ His is the first reported visit in 1542 in the chronicles by Pedro Cieza de León, however, the island already appeared on Spanish charts since 1530
- ^ Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa wrote in 1579 that "they are now called after St. Felix and St. Ambor (i.e. Felix and Nabor)". However, the name of the martyr Ambor (Nabor) became confused with that of the more famous bishop Saint Ambrose (San Ambrosio)
