Counterstamp is a term used to describe the process in which a coin or other form of currency is marked in a way that distinguishes it from it's original condition. Counterstamping is done for several reasons and with several methods depending on the purpose of the stamp and the material the currency is made from. The most common reason for counterstamping is to advertise a product, company, or person. Other reasons may be as practical as certifying the currencys authenticity or unpracticle as using the currency to test a tool like a silversmiths punch. The practise has been recorded historicaly since the late 18th century and remained common until the early 19th century when most of counterstampings purposes were replaced with more practicle methods.
