I’m a user. And I want to improve Wikipedia. I focus on fixing problems in pages with problem templates.
I’ve noticed that I remove more characters than I add. I think this makes sense; I’m not really adding research or pulling more from sources, but shortening lengthy quotes, neutralizing, or, in extreme cases, deleting, POV content, and editing for grammar and flow. I can see how this could be looked down upon, but many articles are a bit of a mess. Wikipedia has enough information that organizing it in a better way can be just as valuable as adding more. And I’m often not just organizing content, but making it less biased, changing or eliminating paragraphs that are POV. This bias could make it harder for someone to get at the truth or even influence their views in a manner that feels almost like a breach of trust; Wikipedia’s purpose is to give you information, not to influence you.
Sometimes I have lengthy explanations or arguments on talk pages. That’s just my personal style when I’m trying to explain the information I have and my view on what should be done. A lot of words can be the easiest way to get across what I’m trying to say.
