Copied from Into the Forest (italicized minor edits):
During a storm, several beams of the roof break and Eva goes into labour. The sisters flee for a hollowed out tree stump that once served as their play house, where Eva gives birth to a baby boy. Returning to their ruined home, Eva decides to burn down the house with the remainder o the gas their father purchased from Stan in case anyone passing will think that they died in a fire. Before setting the house ablaze, they collect a few precious items and keepsakes such as a family photo, and begin to walk into the darkened forest.
The girls board up the house and Eva stays within doors. Eva throws up, and soon realizes she is pregnant. To Nell's surprise, Eva has decided to keep the baby, saying that she doesn't want to lose any more. To help nourish Eva during her pregnancy, Nell hunts and butchers a pig.
From IMDB.com:
The pig butchering scene was real. Elliot Page learned the process specifically to include in this film. They're quoted explaining how it was difficult and upsetting.
From TIME:
For Wood, mastering the role of Eva took fierce commitment. The actor screamed so hard that the capillaries in her eyes burst while she was shooting the assault scene, and she ate poker-chip sized portions of lettuce and chickpeas to get a sense of Eva’s hunger. As Wood tells TIME, “I really wanted to feel what the girls were feeling.”
Include into Production:
Elliot Page learned how to butcher a pig in order to perform the process well in the movie[1]. Evan Rachel Wood's methodical approach to getting into Eva's character included eating extremely small portions of food. During the assault scene, the pressure from her screaming caused the blood vessels in her eyes to burst [1].
