Elizabeth Anne (Janie) Mason (born 1941)[1] has been a trade unionist,[2] nurse, school teacher and university lecturer in nursing and is the founder and curator of the Nursing Museum at Charles Darwin University.[3] She was a pioneer in the process of taking nursing education from hospitals to university in the Northern Territory and was a member (2000-2006) and chair of the Academic Board of Charles Darwin University (2001-2003)[4] head of School of Nursing (1997-2000)and the first woman president of the NT Trades and Labor Council (2000-2004).[4]

After a career nursing in acute care, urban and remote communities, as well as teaching secondary school science and Darwin Hospital nurse trainees, Janie Mason entered academe in 1983.Janie was Chair of the Academic Board of Charles Darwin University from 2001-2003 and a member from 2000-2006. She served in various representations for seven years on the University’s Council and was head of the School of Nursing 1997-2000. After many years on the NT Trades & Labor Council, Janie served as the first woman president of the NT Trades & Labor Council 2000-2004.[4],
In the Australia Day honours of 2019 she was awarded an AM[6] for "her significant service to nursing and to the community of the Northern Territory".[7][8]
"She arrived in the NT in 1964 and practised nursing in Batchelor, Nhulunbuy, Yulara and Darwin before starting teaching. In the early 1980s, when the NT started teaching nursing at university for the first time, Mrs Mason signed up to help educate the next generation of Territory nurses....."[7]
