Juan Jose "Lico" Cortina was a Mexican Footballer who was one of the founders of the present day Mexican soccer team Club Atlas. Born in the Mexican city of Guadalajara, who came from Spanish roots, Juan Jose was meant to be an indelible part of the idiosyncrasy of the city. As a visionary and an entrepreneur, he founded Club Atlas in 1916. As a child, Juan Jose had an immense passion for Football. When Juan Jose was sent to England for his studies, He practiced playing Football for 12 years before he left England to become a rancher after the death of his father, in Mexico. Him being eager to bring his new passion of Football to his home country, Juan Jose met with several of his friends in a cafe in Guadalajara. They all decided to create a football club for Guadalajara. Juan Jose was not only the founder of Atlas , but also their captain and driving force in the field of technical play style in those days when the other clubs in town played rudimentary and disorganized. Linked to the club all his life , whether in exhibition games with his former teammates in years following its withdrawal or commonly attending facilities whereabouts remained . In the sixties his place in history as a maker of one of the most important sports institutions of the country was recognized by President Adolfo Lopez Mateos, who gave him a certificate commemorating their vision. Proud as one of the glorious red and black colors, when his untimely death occurred in 1966 it was requested that his coffin was to be covered with a flag of Club Atlas.
