Sutan Muhammad Taufiq Thaib is a descendant of Adityawarman, the King of Pagaruyung Kingdom and inherit as a King presently in Pagaruyung Kingdom. He has played many ceremonial roles as the King of Pagaruyung Kindom in many important events. As the King, He has awarded many prominent figures. Among them are the 6th Indonesian President Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the first lady Ani Yudhoyono, the 5th Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri and her husband Taufik Kiemas, Sultan Hemengku Buwono X, the Sultan of Kesultanan Djogjakarta Hadiningrat and the latest one in 2014 was the award given to the wife of the Malaysian Prime Minister, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansoor.

Beside his ceremonial role as the king of Pagaruyung Kingdom, Sutan Muhammad Taufiq Thaib was the member of Indonesian parliaments (DPR/MPR-RI) serving for two periods, (1992-1997) and (1997-1999). In addition, He was also a civil servant at Padang Municipality holding several important positions during his career. He is also active in promoting bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia especially between West Sumatra Province in Indonesia and Negeri Sembilan State in Malaysia. Recognizing his contribution to the bilateral relationship, the late Yang Dipertuan Negeri Sembilan, Almarhum Tuanku Ja'far Ibn Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman awarded him with the title of Dato' Paduka Tuanku Ja'far in 2003. As a young man, Sutan Muhammad Taufiq Thaib was active in youth organization serving as the chairman of KNPI, West Sumatra Chapter and was sent officially to represent Indonesia into a youth international conference held by the United Nations (UN) in New York City, the USA in 1987. Sutan Muhammad Taufiq Thaib completed his tertiary study from faculty of law Universitas Andalas, Padang in 1974 holding the degree of "Sarjana Hukum".

Sutan Muhammad Taufik Thaib is married to his cousin Puti Reno Rachma Oesman with whom he has two sons namely Dr. Sutan Emir Hidayat and Sutan Muhammad Arif Muningsyah. The couple's eldest son is currently working at the University College of Bahrain (UCB) as the Director of the MBA program. The second son is currently doing his business at Sungai Tarab, Tanah Datar, West Sumatra.
