Monopoly (モノポリー) is a 1993 video game for the Super Famicom, co-developed by CreamSoft and Ape, and published by Tomy. It is a video game adaptation of the Monopoly board game and was released only in Japan. In 1995, Tomy published a sequel called The Monopoly Game 2, which was likewise Japan-exclusive.

This game should not be confused with the 1991 Monopoly game developed by Sculptured Software, released on several platforms.

Development

[edit]

Omorita Fukashi, the game's programmer, has written about the development of Monopoly on his website, omorita.com. He states that the idea to convert the board game to a video game came from Shigesato Itoi, owner of Ape Inc. and designer of the Mother/EarthBound series. Itoi was inspired to create Monopoly after a talk with his colleague Shigeru Miyamoto, who allegedly said that the ideal video game is "like an amusement park", leading Itoi to envision a "Monopoly mansion". The game was directed by Tsunekazu Ishihara (who would later found Creatures Inc.) and programmed by the aforementioned Fukashi. Character design was done by Hisashi Michio (jp) and Shogo Toda (jp). The music was composed by Koichi Sugiyama. Fukashi claims that he programmed the game in 3 months in an apartment in Sendagaya, Tokyo, and that the game went on to sell about 80.000 units.[2]

The game was financed and published by Tomy. Neither CreamSoft nor Ape is credited on the package or the title screen.[3] However, a text in the game's source code reads: "SFC MONOPOLY Program by Ohmorita Fukashi / CreamSoft.Inc.", followed by a phone number. This hidden bit is documented on the website The Cutting Room Floor.[4][better source needed]
