Annie Ryan

[edit]

Annie Ryan was a worker at a cigarette factory around the time of the Dublin Lockout in 1913. Not much is known about her, but one quote has made her famous; "Nothing was granted: not your vote, not your education, not your daily wage - all was hard fought for." These words sums up just how difficult life could be for women of that time. The working conditions at the factories in the early 1900:s were hard, for both women and men. Some workers organised themselves into unions, and one of those were for women like Annie Ryan; the Irish Women Workers Union, found by, amongst others, Rosie Hackett.
