Article Critique

[edit]

I recently discovered a Japanese jazz pianist known as Ryo Fukui. His first album, Mellow Dream, is among the purest jazz albums I have enjoyed. Wikipedia being a great tool for the exploration of new music, I feel that the Ryo Fukui page should be as insightful and compelling as possible. With this in mind, I visited the Ryo Fukui page on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: it's lack of sources, it's lack of historical background, and it's failure to mention the recent resurgence of the artists popularity.

Citations

[edit]

In order to meet Wikipedia's guidelines, an article must provide sources for all of its information. If this condition is not met, the article is deemed unreliable. Just a quick glance indicates that the article cites none of its sources. One reference was provided, which is clearly inadequate. The page must be reworked in terms of its sources so as to be take with any credence by the reader.

Historical Context

[edit]

Many pages written about important people feature lengthy sections describing the historical context which underlies the contributions the figure made to society. A large part of what makes Ryo Fukui so special is how he fits into the history of the Japanese jazz scene. There is much that can be said on this topic which is not included on the page. A section added here would benefit the article.

Resurgence in Popularity

[edit]

Though enormously influential in Japan, Ryo is fairly unheard of in the West. Recently however he was discovered by a large number of people via the internet, without which Ryo may have been forgotten. The existence of one his albums, My Favorite Tune, was debated until an anonymous YouTube user uploaded the final remaining copy after purchasing it from Ryo's widow. With all this taken into account I really like to see a section covering the topic.

Summary

[edit]

This article left me feeling quite underwhelmed. None this articles sources are provided, making it's information dubious at best. Overall, the page was lacking in details. Many pieces of historical information which could caught the reader's attention were neglected. The page could have used a section outlining significance of Ryo Fukui's recent boost in popularity, and what makes it interesting. If these changes were implemented, the article would be much more complete.
