Tears of the Trufflepig is a 2019 speculative fiction novel by American writer Fernando A. Flores. Though it is not Flores' first published book, it is his first novel. The novel is set in a future where farmed food is scarce and the rich survive through the use of "filtered" animals and plants, created through an artificial process. "Filtered" animals tend to be extinct taxa, restored to life for conversion into food or clothing, or for use as entertainment. Much of the novel is set in Texas, where the United States has built two border walls and fully militarized the border.

Development

Flores began work on the book in 2014. Flores does not use a computer to write, and did not use one during the composition of Tears of the Trufflepig. Flores won a $10,000 award for his first book, Death to the Bullshit Artists of South Texas, Vol. 1. The prize allowed Flores to work part time, giving him an opportunity to focus more on Tears of the Trufflepig than he otherwise would have. Flores cites Roberto Bolaño's book 2666 as an inspiration.
