Operation Grange (band)

[edit]

Operation Grange, named after the search operation by the Scotland Yard, is an American hardcore punk band from Suffolk, Virginia, and formed in late 2022. Initially, the band was made up of Johnathan Coggshell on guitar and bass, Aaron Coggshell on vocals, and Joshua Whitmore on bass. However, due to rowdy behavior, Joshua was kicked out before the band could release any material. In early 2023, Owen Cobb joined as the drummer, completing the band's lineup.

With this new lineup in place, Operation Grange recorded and released their first demo tape, Scrum, in July 2023. The demo tape, recorded on a no-fi budget in Johnathan's garage, showcased the band's raw sound and aggressive energy. The band continued to evolve, with Johnathan and Aaron investing in sound equipment to record more music. In September 2023, they released another demo tape, Insurmountable Chaos, which was released on YouTube on September 9, 2023.

Debut EP

[edit]

In November 2023, Operation Grange moved their recording to their new own home studio inside of Johnathan's parents house, where they began working on their debut EP, Regicide. The EP, which was slated for release later in the month, marked a major step forward in the band's evolution. To help with the recording process, Owen Cobb enlisted the help of his friend Grayson Hampton, who not only contributed to the production but also contributed vocals on their song "Amphibious."

The 8-track EP, Regicide, was released on November 28, 2023, through the band's unofficial home label. While the EP did not gain widespread attention, it was generally acclaimed from those who did hear it and was hailed as"catastrophic experimental work of art," with its chaotic and boundary-pushing sound setting it apart from more conventional hardcore punk sound.

After the release of Regicide, the band took a break for the holidays. During this time, Johnathan released a collection of solo covers in December titled "Operation Grange: Some Solo Covers".

"Fleshcalator"

[edit]

As the new year began in 2024, Operation Grange returned to the studio to continue recording new material. During this time, their home studio went through a transition, moving to "The Barn," a shed behind Johnathan's house. Despite the shift in locations, the band managed to get together and record several new songs for their first full-length album. The lineup expanded with Grayson Hampton officially joining, alongside Jake Basnight, adding new layers to the band's sound.

By late January 2024, the band completed their debut album, Fleshcalator, which was released on January 24, 2024. This marked a significant milestone for Operation Grange, as it was the first release distributed to major music streaming platforms like YouTube Music, Spotify, and Apple Music. Fleshcalator also featured the band's first official music video for the track "Slop Station," which was filmed by Mack Cobb.

Despite the band's efforts, Fleshcatalor went largely unnoticed, much like their previous release Regicide, and failed to gain significant traction or expand their fan base. Nevertheless, the album showcased the band's relentless drive and continued evolution, with a lo-fi yet still chaotic hardcore punk sound.

Following the release of Fleshcalator, Operation Grange slowed down their recording pace due to availability issues. They still released a handful of singles, including "Cheez-It Belt" on March 8, 2024, followed by "Potato Cult" on March 15, "Execution" on April 10, and "Sklump" on April 29. These singles, though well-received by a small group of listeners, did not have an impact on the band's visibility among the Punk revival scene.

Currently, Operation Grange has not released any new material but is working on their sophomore album, Filth, which is scheduled for release either in December 2024 or January 2025.
