Alis Volat Proprilis (She flies with her own wing)
For a thousand years, Pentecost island tribes in the Vanuatu of South pacific have been jumping off about 100 ft. high wooden towers with vines attached to their ankles, as a manhood test, in order to prove their courage. The origin of the land dive is legendary. Tradition holds that once a man, Tamalie so mistreated his wife that she ran away and climbed a Banyan tree. He found her and climbed after her. She had tied lianas around her ankles and, just as Tamalie reached out of grab her, she jumped and he followed.
The lianas saved her life, but he died. Feminists may be interested to know the other origins of tradition. Seems one princess threatened to throw herself off a cliff if her wondering mate did not return to the fold. She went ahead with the cleverly disgusted ruse and her deranged husband followed her in sympathy. He did not notice that she had attached a set of vines to her ankles. Needless to say, she lived to collect the formidable inheritance and a different lover. The other man, determined that no woman should trick them, began practicing dives with lianas around their ankles. The land dive serves several psychological purpose: It gives the men a chance to demonstrate their courage, to show off in front of women, and to get a public hearing of their troubles. Some men, before jumping, discuss their martial difficulties. And the wives must stand there and listen. Today the natives charge tourists to watch their vine bound land dives.

W. Shakespeare Fortes recornized 'Life is but a passing shadow..?' And Macho, his philosophy is simple; 'life is just one big party. It's better to burn out than to fade away'. Meanwhile he recognized to challenge back after seeing a video "Explorers: A century of Discovery", and reading stories of magazines "South Seas' Incredible Land Divers", "Land Diving With the Pentecost Islansers" and "Down to Earth" from the 'National Geographic Society' shows footages of land divers of Pentecost Island of Vanuatu. And so in later of 80's he sailed to South pacific for archaeological leaping. Actually Land Diving is the origin of ths day's Macho's Bungy Jumping.
