The Big Ten Lacrosse Conference is an athletic conference that competes in NCAA Division I Mens and Womens Lacrosse. In it’s inaugural season in 2015, it contained 6 teams. Maryland, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Rutgers are the full members of the Big Ten, and compete in both men’s and women’s. Johns Hopkins competes in only the Men’s Conference, while Northwestern competes in only the Women’s. Despite being one of the newest formed conferences in the sport, the Big Ten contains one of the oldest and most heated rivalries in all of sports between Maryland and Johns Hopkins. These two schools make up 55 of the 56 total national championships claimed by the 6 collective schools.

Commissioner James Delaney announced the formation of the conference in June of 2013. The formation became possible after the conference realignment of Rutgers University and the University if Maryland. The formation of these two sports became the 27th and 28th official sports of the Big Ten.

It was recently announced that Johns Hopkins would begin competing in the women’s sport in the 2016-2017 season.

Men's Conference

With the addition of associate member Johns Hopkins, the teams that make up the Men's conference are Maryland, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, and Rutgers.

Women’s Conference

With the addition of Maryland, the Big Ten contains three of the most historically dominant programs in the history of the sport. Since the inception of the national championship in 1982, Maryland, Northwestern, and Penn State have won a collective 25 championships.

Tournament

Big Ten Conference rules dictate that there must be a minimum of six teams competing in a sport in order to sanction an official tournament at the end of the regular season. Only the top four teams compete in the tournament, which is seeded based on conference records. The inaugural men’s champion was Johns Hopkins, who defeated Ohio State. The inaugural women’s champion was Penn State over Ohio State.

Maryland-Johns Hopkins Men’s Rivalry

Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland have played each other over 100 times in the most heated rivalry in the sport. However, with Johns Hopkins being an independent for it’s entire history and the Terps being ACC, they have never shared the same conference. Both teams have since moved to join the Big Ten Conference, giving the rivalry even higher stakes.
