ABOUT ME
[edit]I am the producer and co-director of the feature documentary, SAVING LUNA. SAVING LUNA is the true story of Luna, a young orca who was separated from his famliy on the west coast of Vancouver Island, and tried to befried people.
With my husband, Michael Parfit, I have spent several years working on Luna's story. I am also the co-author of a non-fiction book about Luna (under contract with a major US publisher.) I assisted Michael with his 2004 Smithsonian magazine article about Luna. From 2004 to 2006 we lived almost full-time in Gold River, the small community on Nootka Sound, near Luna's adopted home. In 2005, in response to what we saw as an untenable situation for Luna, we proposed a scientifically-designed management plan for Luna, which involved consistent and scientifically-planned enrichment and interaction from humans. The plan was controversial; it received endorsement from some scientists, and criticism from others. Ultimately, it was not approved by DFO.
SAVING LUNA was released theatrically and played in theatres across Canada in 2009. I've spent a lot of time recently travelling to film festivals around the world to present the film. SAVING LUNA has won 24 awards from places as diverse as China, Japan, Bermuda, the UK, the USA, the Canary Islands, Australia, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and my homeland, Canada.
