Bio

[edit]

My name is Luke Sawyer Griffin and I live in a small town outside of Everett, Washington. I am heavily involved in my community in activities such as Track and Field, Cross Country, TSA (Technology Student Association) and church related events such as Youth Groups and volunteer services all over the world. My Dad is a member of the United States Navy so my family rarely stays in the same place for a long period time. Due to my Dads job I've lived in 7 different states (Washington, Nebraska, Connecticut. New York, New Mexico, Georgia, South Carolina). With the constant pressure of moving around I find that I have mastered the ability to insert myself in any environment I am in. I love the sport of Track because anyone can participate that wants to get involved and the feeling of a family is constantly present as everything you do is with your teammates and all the struggles you face are being faced by the person beside you. I run all distance events (400 meter dash, 800 meter dash, 1600 meter dash and 3200 meter dash) and my times look like this:

  • 400 meters- 1:03.68 seconds
  • 800 meters- 2:08.76
  • 1600 meters- 4:38.48
  • 3200 meters- 10:10.17

As far as Wikipedia is concerned with me I don't really know what topics I'd prefer to look into because I'm new to this format. I think as I progress and learn the formatting I'll be able to discover which topics interest me the most and I can go from there. As of right now the sky is the limit and I'll just play it as I go. I don't see myself staying involved in Wikipedia after the quarter unless I take Prof. Arnstons class again. I'm not the sit around and work type of person. I prefer hands on projects which I don't see much of throughout Wikipedia. My name is Luke Griffin and I appreciate you looking into my Wikipedia page.

Article Critique

[edit]

Starting this article critique I found myself searching around the field of sports, specifically track and field distance running. Since the topic itself was in such depth I looked into athletes that I know. At first I looked up my personal favorite Matthew Centrowitz Jr., an Olympian in the 2016 Rio Olympics who took the gold medal in the 1500 meter dash. His article was very detailed and I found it hard to come up with anything negative to critique about it so I went up on his family tree and found his father Matt Centrowitz. I visited the Matt Centrowitz page on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: the references were outdated and some didn't work, there was a lack of in depth details and it felt like a run on of "drop and run information" (this is my last English teachers favorite thing to say about flow in articles like this) and there were no pictures that I felt necessary for an article about a person.

Outdated References

[edit]

Don't get me wrong, some of the references were solid and had great information, but others didn't work. For instance these are the references I clicked on that didn't work or just weren't there anymore: http://cstv.collegesports.com/404/?ref=https://en.wikipedia.org/,https://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/cover/cover.html,http://www.usatf.org/Page-Not-Found.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/statistics/champions/USAOutdoorTF/men/m5000m.asp

These are only a few that I found and there were definitely more. I don't suspect that all the information this article collected came from the missing and outdated sites but some of it did and I don't know if it's reliable information if I can't see where these people are drawing their information from. Therefore these references need to be refreshed so the article looks stronger than it appears.

"Drop and Run"

[edit]

I'll start off this part by explaining what it means to pull a "Drop and Run" when writing essays. My last English teacher, Mr. Kohagen (bless his soul, he got fired last year for being a crappy teacher), while going on his usual rant to my high school class about how bad our essays were brought up how most of us lacked the ability to explain details of specific sources and felt the need to give this style of writing his own name. This is where the phrase "Drop and Run" came from. "Drop and Run" is a style of writing where you vaguely bring up a certain topic and then continue on to the next topic with no specific details or explanation of why the subject, source or piece of information was brought up in the first place. Whether you think this is a weird way to explain something like this or not, this is the way I would describe the article about Matt Centrowitz. There seems to be no in depth detail about the man or his accomplishments. The only thing I see throughout the whole article is partial mentions of things related to Matt. I only know information regarding Matt and his family because he and his son are idols to me. People who have no clue who Matt is before reading his Wikipedia article won't get much information due to the use of "Drop and Run".

Pictures?

[edit]

This might just be a personal preference but I would think going into an article about a person that I'd be able to get a good look at what this person looks like based off pictures inserted in the article. This is not the case in the Matt Centrowitz article because there are no pictures. How am I supposed to know who this person is when I see him on TV or out in the real world if I can't look at his personal autobiography and find a picture of him? I'd know all about the person but not know who the person IS!! This article needs at least one picture.

Summary

[edit]

If it weren't for my passion in track and field distance running I wouldn't be able to connect or do anything with the information about Matt Centrowitz because the information is possessed in outdated references, the information is unexplained and not detailed enough for me to make sense of it, and I can't make a mental note of the image of Matt because I can't see what he looks like from this article with no pictures. This article all together is not very good because of these circumstances and I wouldn't trust it very much if I were to come across it for the first time. This article needs help and I hope my critique emphasized that need for pictures, updated sources and more details about the information.
