ProtoStar II
[edit]ProtoStar II (or ProtoStar 2) is the name of a geostationary satellite which is owned and operated by ProtoStar Limited (Protostar Ltd.). It is a BSS 601HP satellite, that was originally built in the 1999-2002 time frame as PanAmSat PAS 8iR.
PAS 8iR History
[edit]PanAmSat contracted with Boeing Space Systems (ex Hughes Space and Communications) in 2002 for the PA 8iR satellite. PAS 8iR was intended to be the replacement satellite for the 32 channel (32 active transponders) PAS 8i, which provided dedicated DIRECTV service to Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean.
On 15 November 2002, PanAmSat terminated its contract with Boeing Satellite Systems for the almost-completed Galaxy-8iR satellite. PanAmSat was later awarded a $72M refund from Boeing.
The former PAS 8iR became in aircraft terms a "hanger queen", an aircraft, or in this case a spacecraft, that never left the hanger. The satellite was stored at Boeing for several years while Boeing attempted to find a buyer for the nearly finished spacecraft.
ProtoStar Ltd, signed a contract with Boeing on Jan 14, 2008[1] to build ProtoStar II. ProtoStar II is the PAS 8iR spacecraft with modifications to the
Payload
[edit]Protostar II has a Ku-band payload of 16 channels on horizontal and vertical polarizations with 2 coverage areas, India, and the Philippine Islands, and an X/S-band payload of 5 channels each on Horizontal and vertical polarization providing Direct-to-Home satellite television programming for Indonesia.
Launch
[edit]ProtoStar II was sucessfully launched on May 16, 2009 from Baikanour Cosmodrom on a Proton Brez M rocket. o launch in 2009, the ProtoStar II satellite will feature high-powered capacity and significantly expand ProtoStar's capacity throughout the Asia-Pacific region. ProtoStar is developing a satellite constellation of high-powered geostationary satellites that will provide a satellite network enabling robust direct-to-home (DTH) services in Asia.
"With the addition of this new Boeing 601HP commercial satellite to its fleet, ProtoStar will provide optimized direct-to-home satellite television service and broadband Internet access across the Asia-Pacific region," said Howard Chambers, vice president and general manager of Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems. "ProtoStar II will reach billions of people in India, Indonesia, Taiwan, the Philippines and Southeast Asia."
Philip Father, ProtoStar's CEO, added that, "ProtoStar II demonstrates again our commitment to building a multi-satellite constellation to enable the next generation of television services across Asia. Boeing's support of our satellite manufacturing program reflects our shared vision of this exciting high power, high definition DTH future."
Boeing is building and testing ProtoStar II at its 1 million square foot satellite manufacturing facility in El Segundo, Calif.
