Vicky Nguyen is an investigative reporter currently with NBC Bay Area, KNTV, in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is a member of the NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit, and works alongside Tony Kovaleski, Stephen Stock, Jenna Susko, and Elyce Kirchner. She is an enterprise reporter. Before joining NBC Bay Area, Vicky worked at various television stations in Florida, Nevada and Arizona.[1]
Education
[edit]Vicky was born in Saigon, Vietnam, and moved to the United States when she was two years old. She grew up in San Jose and Santa Rosa, and became a US citizen at age 10.[2] She attended the University of San Francisco on an academic scholarship, and graduated as valedictorian with a major in Communications and a minor in Biology.[3][2]
Professional Career
[edit]According to her official NBC Bay Area bio,
Vicky's favorite part of her job is meeting people from diverse backgrounds and having the opportunity to tell stories that make a difference in how people view the world. Her most memorable interviews are with everyday people who share their inspirational stories.[1]
While in Phoenix, Arizona with KSAZ, Nguyen covered the Baseline Killer and Serial Shooter investigations, which was the first instance in which two separate serial killers attacked the same city at the same time.[2]
While with Central Florida News 13 in Orlando, Florida, she shot, wrote and edited her stories before delivering live reports.[2] As Vicky wrote on her blog, "I was a 'one man band.' I shot my own video on a 20 pound DVC Pro camera (and) carried my own 15 pound tripod."[3]
Career History
[edit]Nguyen came home to the Bay Area in January 2007, and started with NBC Bay Area as a freelance reporter. Shortly thereafter she was hired full-time, and worked as a special assignment reporter for KNTV.[3] She is now part of the NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit.[4]
Before returning to California, Vicky worked with KSAZ in Phoenix, Arizona, and "became the Biggest Little Reporter in the World" while with KOLO in Reno, Nevada.
She began her career in Orlando, Florida with Central Florida News 13, shortly after graduating from college.[3]
Awards
[edit]Vicky is an Emmy award-winning reporter, and has also received multiple other journalism awards. She has won two Emmys in the past two years. In 2011, she won an Emmy in the category of "Feature News Report – Serious",[5] and in 2012 she won an Emmy in the category of "On-Camera Talent – Reporting".[6] She had four Emmy nominations in each year.
While in Phoenix with KSAZ, she earned two Emmy nominations in the categories of Live Reporting and Spot News.[1]
In addition, she has earned several awards from the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) and the Radio and Television News Directors Association (RTNDA).[2]
