Brent Cannon is an award-winning television journalist currently with NBC Bay Area, KNTV, which covers the San Francisco Bay Area. He currently anchors NBC Bay Area News at 7 PM on California Nonstop. Previously, he has co-anchored Today in the Bay with his wife, Laura Garcia-Cannon. Cannon also has experience as a sportscaster, and has worked in various cities throughout the United States, including Fresno, Denver, and Phoenix.[1]

Education

After growing up in Denver, Brent attended the University of Colorado at Boulder from 1979 to 1984, and originally studied Astro-Geophysics before transitioning to a major in the School of Journalism. He also walked on to football team while in college, and played the position of punter.[1]

Professional Career

Currently, Cannon is the anchor of NBC Bay Area News at 7 P.M.[2] This broadcast is part of NBC California Nonstop, which is "a unique round-the-clock local and regional news, information and lifestyle channel." The newscast that Cannon anchors "provides a thorough summary of the day’s news and in-depth local stories at a time that is convenient for late commuters."[3] The stations KNTV (San Francisco Bay Area), KNBC (Los Angeles), and KNSD (San Diego) have teamed up to launch this program.

As an anchor, Cannon's portion of the program (NBC Bay Area News at 7 PM) airs weekday evenings on the over the air channel 11-2 for those in the Bay Area.

Brent has extensive public speaking experience with nearly 30-years experience as a journalist, broadcaster and brand developer. Brent connects with audiences and deliver's simple, easy to understand insight and perspective.

Brent sometimes hosts Google+ hangouts at his page Mondays through Fridays at 7 pm Pacific time.

He also maintains a Youtube channel which features material related to his broadcasting.

Career History

While at KNTV, Cannon has anchored the NBC Bay Area News at 7 PM broadcast, as well as the Today in the Bay broadcast. The NBC California Nonstop initiative (which his 7 PM newscast is a part of) was launched on May 3, 2011.[3]

Prior to joining NBC Bay Area, Cannon was a morning news anchor in Phoenix with KPHO for two years,[5] and also was the 5 PM News anchor in Fresno, CA while with KSEE.

Before becoming involved in news and anchoring, Brent was a sportscaster for eleven years in various cities throughout the United States. He was the Sports Director while with KSEE in Fresno, CA and KIEM in Eureka, CA, and also was the Weekend Sports Anchor while with KHSL in Chico, CA. He began his broadcasting career as a sports intern in Denver.[1]

Awards

Brent has received multiple awards for broadcasting throughout his career, including various Associated Press awards, Emmys, and other honors.

While co-anchoring Today in the Bay with his wife, the two earned numerous awards and recognitions for their on-air talent, including three consecutive years in which they received the Emmy award for Best Daytime Newscast. They were also named Best Daytime Newscast by the Bay Area Women in Radio and Television for two consecutive years, and won a "Pubby" award, as Best Anchor team by Bay Area Public Relations firms.

Brent has also won an Emmy for special assignment reporting, and was honored with the Associated Press Award for Best Sportscast in the Southeast Region in 1993.[1]

Personal Life

Brent is married to fellow anchor Laura Garcia-Cannon, and the couple have previously co-anchored the morning news program with KNTV, "Today In The Bay".
The pair met while Brent was working in Fresno, and together they have three triplets.[6]

According to his bio, Brent "likes football (especially college) and enjoys playing golf, fly-fishing, snowshoeing and skiing."[1]

He maintains a blog about fly-fishing as well.
