The map depicts the line circa 1900.
On May 31, 1900, the Northwestern Elevated Railroad began service between Wilson and the Loop. Connections were made at Wilson with the Sheridan Park station of the Chicago and Evanston Railroad for points north. Between Wilson and Chicago Avenues, the Northwestern Elevated operated a four-track line with express and local service. Local trains and stations were on the outer tracks while express trains operated on the inner tracks. Express/local stations on the four-track section were located at Sheridan, Belmont, Fullerton, Halsted, and Sedgwick and consisted of twin island platforms set between the inner and outer tracks to allow for cross platform transfers between express and local trains. As the line crossed Chicago Avenue, it narrowed to two tracks and moved from private right-of-way and onto city streets.
