It was interesting that so much was written about the Origins of "jumping the broom tradition" among African Americans but none came close to the real story.
IT is an old practice that still exists till today in rural south eastern Nigeria among the Igbo or Ibo tribe. It is a belief system where by if a man and a woman jumps the broom, that mean they are going to marry each other no matter the opposition (be together for ever or tied to each other the same way the broom is tied together). Depending on the province of Igboland, The man can place the broom for the girl to jump over, if she does, that means she will be madly in-love with him and marry him ultimately ( tied to him for ever). In Igboland the practice is considered what you would call "VOO DOO" in USA today. It is done in secret because no family wants to have their son or daughter jump the broom for any body because its like getting married while under spell. Since allot of the slave where from the Igbo tribe, it possible that they brought the practice with them during slave trade. Since this old practice like many other practices of the Igbo people is not written in any book, a trip to Igboland in Nigeria would have been a good idea before this article was published. I know this because it is my culture, I grew up in it, I am an Igbo.
