Jonathan Veitch is a scholar, writer and the current president of Occidental College in Los Angeles, California.
Jonathan Veitch was born in 1959 in Los Angeles to a well-known Hollywood family. His grandfather is actor Alan Ladd and his father John Veitch is president of Columbia Pictures' worldwide productions.
Jonathan Veitch attended Loyola High School in Southern California. Jonathan Veitch went to Stanford University where he earned his bachelor's degree with honors in 1981. His next step was Harvard University, where Jonathan Veitch received his master's degree in English American Literature in 1988 followed by his PhD in the History of American Civilization in 1992.
In 1990, Jonathan Veitch was a visiting lecturer in the department of English at Pomona College in California. In 1992, he became an Assistant Professor in the English department of the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Jonathan Veitch stayed at the University of Wisconsin for five years before moving on to join the New School in 1997 where he worked as a professor of history and film until 2000.
After a brief stint as a visiting professor at the prestigious Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan, Jonathan Veitch returned to the New School in 2001. Jonathan Veitch became a tenured associate professor and associate provost of the New School in 2002. In 2003, Jonathan Veitch became the dean of Eugene Lang College at the New School.
In 2009, Jonathan Veitch succeeded Robert Skotheim as the president of Occidental College. Since beginning at Occidental College, Jonathan Veitch has worked to improve relations between the college and the surrounding community by limiting campus expansion into the community. In April 2013, Veitch introduced a solar array to generate a portion of the campus's energy supply. Jonathan Veitch is also the first person born in Los Angeles to be president of Occidental College.
Jonathan Veitch published his first book American Superrealism: Nathanael West and the Politics of Representation in the 1930s in 1997. Jonathan Veitch also wrote the book Colossus in Ruins: Mythic Geographies and Lost Histories in the American Provinces.
Veitch has also served as Associate Editor for Contemporary Literature from 1992 until 1997. From 1993 to 2000 Jonathan Veitch was an Editorial Consultant for American Literary History. Jonathan Veitch’s articles have also been featured in publications such as The American Quarterly, The Los Angeles Times Book Review, and The Boston Review.

Jonathan Veitch organized the symposium "Disaster: Recipes and Remedies" which was a three day conference which brought together experts in terrorism, emergency management, and public policy.
In 2001, while he was working at Doshisha University, Jonathan Veitch organized a three week symposium in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Graduate School of American Studies named "The Politics of Culture."
Jonathan Veitch was also an academic consultant for the documentary film Art to the Rescue which focused on the impact of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art on the community it serves, North Adams, Massachusetts.
