Dishonour (play)
Dishonour is a one-woman play created by Terrence Turner in 2012. It explores the perverse concept of ‘honour’ brought to the West by many new immigrants, that has no place in any civilized society.
The title of the play refers to the countless acts of violence that are committed against women and girls every day by angry husbands, fathers, brothers and even other women under the guise of protecting family honour. In fact, these acts of violence dishonour the very women and girls whom the perpetrators seek to protect.
There is a growing awareness and concern about such acts of brutality against women in western society. Of particular worry is the act of FGM or female genetic mutilation, more commonly referred to as female circumcision. Shockingly, FGM continues to be carried out against young women whose families have emigrated to the West, despite public condemnation and laws prohibiting such heinous acts.
Dishonour explores the lives of seven characters ranging in age from six to seventy years old as they struggle to adapt and integrate into their new country, while at the same time shedding light on the barbaric practices that are still being practiced in some communities.
Dishonour was written by Terrence Turner and produced by Timothy Turner, the team behind the 2008 documentary film, Adeles’s Wish, that deals with the restitution of five paintings by renowned Austrian artist, Gustav Klimt, that were stolen from the family of Maria Altmann by the Nazi's in Vienna in 1938.
