Deric Davis (born November 22, 1992) is an American Canadian Football player who is the current starting quarterback for the Fort McMurray Monarchs of the Alberta Football League. He was also a member of San Angelo Bandits of the Indoor Football League. Davis played college football at Trinity Valley Community College and also for the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions from 2012-2014.
Early Life
[edit]Davis was born in Arlington, Texas to Charles and Geraldine Davis. Charles played football at the University of Colorado at the quarterback position and was one of the first African-American quarterbacks in the history of the Big 8 Conference. He attended Barnett Junior High in Arlington and then later Bowie High School in Arlington. His Senior season, he led the Volunteers to a 12-2 record and a finish in the Texas State Semifinals. He was named Texas Class 5A offensive player of the year by the Associated Press, The Dallas Morning News, and The Fort Worth Star Telegram. He also notched first team all state honors in addition to first team all district honors. He graduated from Bowie High in 2010.
Junior College
[edit]Davis was scouted by multiple Division I programs, but decided to attend a Junior College. He signed with Trinity Valley College in Athens, Texas.
Trinity Valley
[edit]Davis joined the TVCC program in the fall of 2010, redshirting his first years. As a Redshirt Freshman, he battled for the starting role with Tucker Carter from Allen, Texas. He made appearances in 7 games for the Cardinals, completing 14 of 26 pass attempts for 192 passing yards with 3 touchdowns. He also rushed for 32 yards on 10 carries. He helped lead TVCC to an 8-3 record and an appearance in the Citizens Bank Bowl in Pittsburg, Kansas.
Texas A&M-Commerce
[edit]Sophomore Season
[edit]After 2011, Davis transferred to Texas A&M-Commerce where he nabbed the starting quarterback spot for Coach Guy Morriss. The Lions struggled to a 1-9 season, however Davis had two memorable moments during the 2012 season. A touchdown run against the Midwestern State Mustangs was featured on ESPN's SportsCenter as a Top Ten play, and he led the Lions to an upset win over Texas A&M-Kingsville, the first win for the Lions over their long time rival in nearly a decade. Davis only started 7 games due to injury in 2012, throwing for 976 yards and 6 touchdowns while completing 94 of 179 attempts. He also rushed for 63 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Junior Season
[edit]At the end of the 2012 season, Guy Morriss resigned and the University hired Colby Carthel as head football coach. Carthel recruited Texas state champion QB Tyrik Rollison and California State Champion QB Harrison Stewart. Davis was relegated to third string to start the season. Rollison went down in the sixth game of the season and Davis became the primary back up, running the Lions goal line offense. Against McMurray University, he rushed for 5 touchdowns against the Warhawks, giving him the school record for most touchdown runs in a game. The Lions had a massive turnaround, finishing 7-5, their first winning record since 2001, and also played in the LiveUnited Texarkana Bowl, their first postseason appearance since 1995. Davis completed 14 of 25 pass attempts for 193 yards and 5 touchdown passes in limited duty.
Senior Season
[edit]Davis was named a team captain and also secured the primary backup spot in addition to commanding the Lions goal line offense again. He played in all 12 games for the Lions, making one start against rival Tarleton State as Rollison was again briefly injured. The Lions won the Lone Star Conference Championship for the first time since 1990 and went back to postseason, defeating East Central Oklahoma 72-21 finishing with a 9-3 record. Davis completed 53 of 76 pass attempts for 682 yards and 12 touchdown passes.
Professional Career
[edit]San Angelo Bandits
[edit]After college, Davis signed with the San Angelo Bandits of the Indoor Football League. His season and career was put on hold due a shoulder injury he had sustained during his senior year, forcing him to temporarily leave football to rehab.
Fort McMurray Monarchs
[edit]Davis signed with Fort McMurray Monarchs of the Canadian Football Alberta Football League. He became the starting quarterback for the Monarchs, leading them to the AFL Championship game, where they fell to the Calgary Gators. Davis led the league in passing and was named Rookie of the Year.
