Shawn Venable (right) has been hired as an assistant track & field coach at Liberty. Liberty Track & Field Head Coach Brant Tolsma has announced the hiring of Shawn Venable as assistant coach for jumps and hurdles. Venable joins the Flames after spending the last four seasons at Oral Roberts. Venable served as assistant track & field coach/recruiting coordinator for Oral Roberts, focusing on the jumps, hurdles, short sprints and throws. He coached a number of standout performers, including two All-Americans, eight qualifiers to the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round meet and 13 Southland Conference champions. "We are excited to have Coach Shawn Venable join our track staff at Liberty," said Tolsma. "His life mission aligns very well with our team mission to develop high-level teams of individuals who represent Jesus Christ in athletics and in daily life. He is passionate and energetic and is experienced in developing high-level athletes. His strongest coaching experience is in the jumps and hurdles, the exact areas we were seeking. He appears qualified to help Liberty's track program continue to progress." Prior to his time at Oral Roberts, Venable spent five seasons (2007-12) as head track & field/cross country coach at Bacone College. He reestablished the program in January 2007 and quickly guided his team to success. The Bacone men's track & field team captured Red River Conference titles in both 2009 and 2012, and Venable was named Red River Conference Coach of the Year both times. Additionally, his men's track & field squad placed inside the top 25 at both the NAIA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2012. During Venable's five years at Bacone, he coached 17 NAIA All-Americans, three NAIA Academic All-Americans, 65 NAIA national qualifiers, 15 Red River Conference champions, 103 all-conference honorees and 47 academic all-conference award winners. Venable began his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater, Oral Roberts, working as a volunteer assistant track & field coach for the 2005-06 season. As an athlete, Venable started out as a middle and long distance runner at Oral Roberts before transitioning to the pole vault and decathlon later in his career. He served as team captain and earned two Mid-Continent all-conference honors as a senior. During Venable's time on the squad, Oral Roberts captured four Mid-Continent Conference championships. The native of Owasso, Okla., owns two degrees and is nearing completion of a third. He graduated from Oral Roberts with a bachelor's degree in theology – New Testament Biblical literature in 2005. Four years later, Venable earned a master's degree in theology – Judeo-Christian Studies from Oral Roberts. He is on track to graduate with a master's degree in secondary education – sports administration from East Central University during the fall of 2016. Venable has also shown a commitment to education within the sport of track & field, winning the 2015 Vern Gambetta Coaching Education Award from USA Track & Field (USATF). Since 2013, he has served as the USATF Coaching Education Southeast Regional Coordinator. Venable spends 8-10 weekends each year instructing USATF Level 1 schools. Venable is an IAAF Level 5/USATF Level 3 certified in jumping events, sprinting events and combined events. He is also a USTFCCCA Strength & Conditioning Coach and a National Pole Vault Coaches Association (NPVCA) Certified Coach. Venable and his wife, Ashley, have three sons, Keegan, Kolton and Kingston.

He will serve as the recruiting coordinator for the Golden Eagles and will also work extensively with the jumpers and the throwers.

At the men's Red-River Conference Championship the men's team broke the conference record for most points scored at the conference meet (222-previously 183) and greatest margin of victory (116- previously 79). Bacone College scored more points than the second and third place finishers combined (Northwood 106, Langston 97). Venable's team crowned seven RRAC Individual Champions, 29 RRAC All-Conference honors and 15 RRAC Academic All-Conference honors.

Leading the 2012 campaign was the senior triumvirate of Murphy, Wiley and Ivy. Jamal Murphy has the school record in the 100m (10.37) and 200m (21.28) and earned 3 All-American honors in the 100m, 200m and 4x400m relay during the 2012 season. Emanuel Wiley is a four-time All-American in the long and triple jumps and has broke and re-broke his school record in the long jump (24'8 ½ / 7.53m) and triple jump (51'4/15.66m) a total of thirteen times. Fellow senior Brian Ivy holds the school record in the 400m (47.98), a piece of the 4x400m school record (3:11.71) and two All-American plaques of his own.

Venable received his graduate degree and undergraduate degree at Oral Roberts University in 2009 and 2005 respectively. While working on his Master's Degree in Judaic-Christian Studies Venable assisted with the Monte Casino track & field team during the 2005-06 season.

At ORU, Venable ran middle and long distance before an injury made him decide to take up pole vault and the decathlon, helping ORU win four conference championships while donning the Blue and Gold.

Venable Helps Start Track Camp in Belize Jul 28, 2014

TULSA, Okla. - The impact of the Oral Roberts University track and field program continued to stretch around the world this summer as ORU Assistant Coach Shawn Venable helped start a track and field camp at the Marion Jones Sport Complex in Belize.

"It was a great joy and honor to work with the athletes and coaches of Belize," said Venable. "Hosting this camp was something that has been on my heart for several years and took a lot of planning. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to travel down there and use the sport of track and field as a vehicle to touch the lives of the youth in Belize."

Venable partnered with the Belize Athletic Association to host the free camp that had more than 40 athletes, ranging from age 4 to members of the Belizian National Team in attendance. The campers worked on everything from general strength exercises to fine tuning their skills.

"Four years ago, I went down to Belize with my former college roommate," said Venable. "It is an English speaking country but is very poor. I kept asking myself 'what can I do to help them?' and this camp seemed like a perfect way to give back."

After four years of planning, Venable and the Belize Athletic Association pulled off the inaugural camp, and plans to continue doing so each year.

Thank you to my wife, Ashley, for her unbelievable support and for allowing me to disappear for random weekends all over the country," said Venable.

The award is to recognize excellence in USA Track and Field Coaching Education. Venable has spent 8-10 weekends a year travelling to host and instruct USATF Level 1 schools. In 2014-15, he worked programs at ORU, Kansas City, Dallas, Nashville, Jacksonville, Las Vegas, Miami and Seattle.
