Abbott Lee Ruskin 05/22/1945
[edit]The Little Orchestra Society opened its seventh season of young people's concerts yesterday morning in the Hunter College Assembly Hall before an audience of 2,000.
What happens to child prodigies? Well, contrary to folklore, a good number of them do not end up on the Bowery, but grow up to be adult prodigies.
In 1955, a young pianist named Abbott Ruskin made his Broadway debut in a comedy named “Festival,” type‐cast as a piano‐playing wunderkind. Nine years old at the time, he already was a pupil of Rosina Lhevinne and had performed Mozart concerto well enough to be noticed in these pages as “a pianist of exquisite tonal Sensibility.” Since 1966 he has studied with Sascha Gorodnit zki.
Mr. Ruskin returned for his official New York recital debut Wednesday night at Alice Tul ly Hall, a polished musician of 25 with a commanding key board technique and the power to excite an audience. It was a fairly traditional but demanding debut program: Beethoven's Sonata No. 22 in F, the Liszt Sonata, Debussy's “Suite Berg amasque,” and Prokofiev's Son ata No. 7.
Liszt's half‐hour masterpiece, whose long arch must be sus tained with intense concentra tion and unbroken dramatic urgency, proved to be ideal for Mr. Ruskin. Athough he flirted with the work's episodic side to a dangerous extent, the re citalist's success was complete. He could dig into the keys with tremendous power and yet pre serve a sonorous tone, (using, now and then, a plethora of pedal), and in the next moment balance the thunder with whis pering tenderness. His piano spoke idiomatic Liszt.
In the Debussy, there was elegance and control and a somewhat standoffish approach that let even “Clair de Lune” make its wistful effect without turning into cotton candy. Mr. Ruskin's touch seemed rather muscular at times for Debussy, and his approach a bit grim.
But that was no problem in the Prokofiev sonata, which pleads for sinewy power. Mr. Ruskin, however, softened the first movement somewhat, rather than trying to out‐Horo witz Horowitz, and saved his steel for a pulverizing attack on the finale.
