Joseph W. Leonard, Ph.D.
After completing his undergarate degree from Missouri Southern State College (Joplin) in 1970 and masters degrees from Kansas State College Pittsburg in 1971 and Drury College (Springfield, Missouri) in 1980, Dr. Leonard received his Ph.D. in business administration in 1983 from the University of Arkansas and joined Miami University as a faculty member in 1983. He has taught for Miami University on the main campus (Oxford, Ohio), the Luxemburg campus, and recently done international business field study programs in the Pacific Rim (China, Korea, Japan, and Hawaii). Additionally, he has served as a visiting professor at Hakuoh University in Oyama, Japan; as an instructor at University of Maryland, Far East Division (in Yokosuka, Japan) and at Pittsburg State University in Kansas.
Because of his otherwise being drafted into the army, Leonard joined the U.S. Navy Reserve in May 1970 and spend two years on active dury in the U.S. Navy from September 1971 to August 1973, mostly stationed in Yokosuka Japan. From August 1973 to August 1979, he worked at Eagle-Picher Industries, Inc. in the Electronics Dision, Couples Plant, as a contract administrator.
Dr. Leonard is the author of numerous books, scholarly journal aricles, book chapters, and papers. These works are about topics such as Japanese business practices, international business, strategic management (theory and practice), company business cases, corporte boards of directors, strategic control, manager and CEO roles, Chinese business, and teaching experiences.
He serves as chair of the Board of Directors of Miami Nation Enterprises. This board manages the tribal businesses of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma.
Dr. Leonard serves as a members of the Board of Trustees of the Ohio Historical Society; and was recently (January 2006) re-appointed by Governor Bob Taft to the Ohio Historic Preservation Site Advisory Board.
