Will Wenderoth

Will Charles Wenderoth (born July 9, 2008) is an Australian chess player, YouTuber, and high achiever in state and regional tournaments. With a NSWJCL rating of 853, (as of September 2024), he is ranked top 36 for NSW Juniors. As of the same time, Will has made approximately $600 in earnings.

Wenderoth has represented Cranbrook School as part of the chess team on Board 1. (2022-present) He currently lies on a score of 16.5/18 in the NSWJCL East Metropolitan division. He also played in the SAC Schools Competition in 2023, winning the regional quarterfinals with a score of 6.5/7, placing tied third in the semi-finals with a score of 5.5/7 and placing =3rd in the finals, and along with the rest of the team, winning the cup for 2023.

Tournaments

Sydney Chess Classic 2024

Will Wenderoth played in the Sydney Chess Classic from July 6-10, unfortunately missing out on the Open division due to rating problems. He won Round 1 in a tricky Caro-Kann, which he had only recently studied and in the second round played Mathew Juszczynski, whom he won against after a shocking blunder on move 28, where he blundered a pawn in a bishop endgame. Unfortunately, he was knocked off the podium after a tough game against Kevin Hamilton, although he did score a consolation win against Jackie Wu and then Andrew Robinson after an unfortunate loss against Jesse Solan. Will scored $100 from his score in this tournament.

Sydney NSWJCL Two-Day Tournament

Will Wenderoth played in the Sydney NSWJCL Two-Day Tournament directly after the Sydney Chess Classic and scored a great result, 8.5/11, taking home second place, tied with Kevin Chen. (All ratings will be listed in NSWJCL) Will (806) won his first three games before conceding a draw against Lucas Zhai (753). He then followed by beating Felix Wang (741) and drawing Alexander Warne (804) in a slightly better position. On the second day of the tournament, Will seemed to be holding a drawish position against WFM Alaina Vincent, but her experience shone through and she outplayed him in the endgame. Will then scored two important successive wins, against Daniel Ding and Max Reichel, one of them succumbing to a smothered checkmate while the other was caught off guard by the counterattacking style of chess Will displayed in the game. With two rounds to go, the results were very important. He played Dean Chen (886) in Round 10, and maintained a slightly better position although eventually, although both players tried to push the position into favourable for themselves, it wasn't successful and the game ended in a draw. In the final round, Will played against Aiden Maleki, a strong player, rated 825 at the time. After a reverse Botvinnik set-up, Will managed to beat Aiden to win second place in a tie with Kevin Chen, who managed to beat Dean Chen in the final round.

The Purdy Memorial

As of the writing of this page, three rounds have been played in the Purdy Memorial. Will has played all three rounds in the Major section. In Round 1, he faced Chelsea Huey (FIDE: 1753) and unfortunately, after a grueling 2 hour game, that was equal in the middlegame after Will was unable to capitalise on an opening advantage, Will blundered a piece in an intermezzo tactic. In the following round, he faced Leo Kuncoro, (FIDE: 1692) and after a rather successful Stonewall system, he ended up a little worse in the middlegame, but with highly tactical play, Will was able to outplay his younger opponent and he won the game after 2.5 hours. In the most recent round, which occured on September 17th, 2024, he played Gary Armstrong, (1720) and in this game, the game was highly accurate by both players although both missed important tactical opportunities. After approximately 32 moves, both players agreed to a draw.
